Pub rock is the frequently forgotten forefather of punk rock, although on the surface the two genres don't appear to have much in common.
The simple, laid-back three-chord shuffles of pub rock -- ranging from straight-ahead rock and roll, to country and blues-rock -- didn't require much skill, but it was a working class, do-it-yourself movent that took rock and roll back to its roots, which is essentially what punk rock did.
Furthermore, pub rock bands established a circuit of nightclubs within England, which is where all the original punk bands played.

Pub rock was a mid- to late-1970s musical movement, largely centred around North London and South East Essex, particularly Canvey Island and Southend on Sea.
Pub rock was largely a reaction to much of the popular music of the era, which tended to be dominated by progressive rock and highly polished, supposedly over-produced American West Coast 'AOR' sounds.
Pub rock was viewed by many as being an immediate precursor to the UK punk rock scene.

At its most basic, that was Pub Rock, and it lasted more or less until Punk Rock arrived in 1976, and the ability to play your instrument well and sing in tune became less important.
At that point, many of the Pub Rock acts adopted lower profiles, and ultimately the publicans, who weren't too keen on people in bondage gear with rings through their noses upsetting their regular customers, dusted off their jukeboxes or introduced strippers — but that's a whole different story.
Pub Rock was a phase which lasted about seven years before it became redundant, and maybe that was its function: to keep the rock 'n' roll flame alight until something new fuelled the fire.

Sandwiched between Glam Rock and Punk Rock came Pub Rock: a bunch of back-to-basics Brit bands, tired of the increasingly pretentious direction music was taking during the early 1970s, who unloaded their amps into the back-rooms of pubs.
Pub Rock was turned on its head again by the arrival of one Andrew Jakeman--"the manager from another planet"--who within two years had transformed himself into "Jake Riviera", and DP McManus into "Elvis Costello"--but that's another book.
Crowds packed into sweaty pubs to watch the bands pumping out high-energy RandB or English rock and roll, but the experience could never transfer effectively to disc--which probably led to its hung-over end: "the blind" as Birch writes, "were in most cases, leading the blind drunk!"--Patrick Humphries --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Jazz, a genre typically much more complex than rock, got started around the turn of the century and crashed into its dual-logical conclusions of free jazz (ideological purity at its extreme) and fusion (forsaking ideological purity for miscegenation) by the end of the '60s.
Often relegated to the status of footnote by its punk progeny, pub rock kept alive the vital flame of human imperfection in music at a time when it was being extinguished on all sides by prog's virtuosity, soft-rock's slickness, and glam's elaborate fantasias.
