Pub session - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pub sessions are not places for learning an instrument.
The word traditional is used loosely as sessions themselves are a relatively recently-revived phenomenon and some instruments considered 'traditional,' such as the bouzouki are in fact relatively new to the genres played at a session.
The bodhrán is common in Irish sessions, but many sessions prefer that only one person play the bodhrán at a time.

Irish traditional music session - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sessions are often held in pubs (with the hope that listeners will buy drinks for the musicians) and everyone who is able to play Irish music on an instrument is welcomed; 'grab your instrument and join along'.
The objective in a session is not to provide music for an audience of passive listeners, but in pub sessions, the punters (non-playing attendees) often come for the express purpose of listening, and the music is for the musicians themselves.
The sessions are a key aspect of traditional music; some say it is the main sphere in which the music is formulated and innovated.

 Chris Smith on Session Dynamics
At the slow session I run, which is explicitly intended as a teaching session, I actively encourage people not to use music at all (note that I avoid the term "discourage;" that's the antithesis of the vibe I want to project).
This slow session is not the same thing as a "session" per se: it's formatted differently, the tempi (obviously) are different, the goals are different, the type of interaction is different.
One of the great joys of the pub session is these unexpected meetings, and some of the most exciting and rewarding experiences just like the jazz jam session is when people unfamiliar with one another's playing square off and really take the music to a high level.

Today things are very different, musicians are keen to pass on their tunes from one to another in the friendly atmosphere of the local pub session.
The pub session is a very weird and wonderful affair not always understood by non-players.
One can find a session any night of the week but the main ones in East Clare would be in Pepper's bar Feakle on Wednesday night, Lena's bar Feakle on Thursday Night and often in the Blacksticks in O'Callaghan's Mills on Saturday nights.

 The Irish "session"
The earliest date that I can establish for a pub session is in the late 1930's and I think this would have been very unusual at the time.
I suggest that unlike the songs, which were fraught with palpable meaning for the community, the session music, brought in through radio and records, while pleasant to listen to, did not bear the same meaning for the community.
At one session, at the end of the evening, some of the older singers sang began to perform songs which encapsulated what being from Newtownbutler is about, and,the moment the singing began, the whole atmosphere changed, and virtually everyone in the pub became intensely engaged.

 The Irish Session part 2
Last month I wrote about how the traditional Irish pub session is a recent phenomenon, which became popular only after the folk craze of the 1960s.
If you happen upon a pub session you might find musicians gathered in a circle, sometimes around a table, engaged with each other in their music, almost oblivious to other bar patrons.
The purpose of the session is to have fun; when this is not the case, musicians tend to leave.

The small pub is not usually opened on Sundays, but Gary, the pub owner, has agreed to open the pub especially for the session players and listeners from 5-7pm with food and drinks being served.
The session was especially set up by myself as a place where beginning and intermediate players feel welcomed as well as comfortable joining the Irish music community as well as squeaking out their first tune (did I mention this was all inspired by the Blaggard’s session).
The session is mainly tune based, but it's done in a "round the circle" format, giving each player a chance to lead a tune or song of their choosing.

 The Irish Session (part 1)
After talking to some native Irish, and some library and internet research, I understand that the traditional Irish pub session is a recent phenomenon, which became popular only after the folk craze of the 1960s, and may have had its origin earlier among Irish immigrants in America, not Ireland.
The pub session is perhaps the last remaining venue for amateur musicians to get together and play their music.
In 1978 virtually no instrumental music was heard in the pubs, although sometimes someone would get out his fiddle, or maybe there would be a fiddle and an accordion, but this was generally at Mrs.

I’m functioning under the belief as both the session leader and as a music teacher, that if players will continue to come to this session on a bi-weekly basis as well as practice as home, they will make huge leaps in their musical progress.
I was told by one player that the session was larger than usual due to presence of guest musician- the lovely and talented- Marie Reilly, not to be confused with Mary Rafferty, box player.
Despite this, everyone was very nice and although this session was amplified, it was more of a session for the players than the audience as the majority of them were excessively drunk by the end of the night—but still very polite.

The Pub Session differs in that it’s an “off the wall” glimpse of the popular band in front of their regular fans.
The recordings come from a pub session at the Rutland Arms, Catford, Kent and were originally sent to Jazz Crusade so that the label had an idea of how the Hot 5 played at their normal club sessions rather than the styles used for the ‘tribute’ CDs that they had earlier recorded for the label.
Such is the quality of the recordings that Crusade have now put them out on this CD; and so they should, as both the music and the quality of the recording are so high that I had to attach a piece of string to my copy to stop it floating to the ceiling.

Be aware, however, if you change the definition of a MasterOp/3000 command or that of an MPE command, trouble may result (especially if that command is used in several loaded UDC's).
