		Public Image Ltd. (PiL) is an English rock band formed in 1978 by vocalist John Lydon (ex-Sex Pistols), guitarist Keith Levene (ex-The Clash), and bassist Jah Wobble.
		PiL is commonly regarded as one of the most challenging and innovative bands of the post-punk period.
		The single "Public Image" was widely seen as diatribe against Malcolm McLaren and his perceived manipulation of Lydon during his career with the Sex Pistols.

		Public Image would continue in one form or another through three decades, releasing numerous albums on their travels.
		Although PiL are still on hold as Lydon continues to work on solo material – together with numerous other projects outside of music – I have no doubt at some point a new PiL will appear, ready to turn things on their head.

		Like it or not, Public Image Limited's First Issue (aka Public Image) was an album that helped set the pace for what eventually became known as post-punk.
		But Warner Bros., the American label to which Public Image Limited were signed, was unhappy with the album, particularly in that the label felt the bass was mixed too loudly -- no one had ever recorded the bass so hot on a regular LP before.
		Public Image Limited protested, but Warner Bros. stood fast and the band ultimately relented; in the early weeks of January 1979 the whole of First Issue was re-recorded for the American market.

		This all started when I met the members of Public Image because a friend of mine, Lisa Yapp (who's a producer for CNN now), was doing a cable show around '79.
		They were going to be a company- that was the concept of Public Image Limited as they explained it to me. Jeanette (Lee), who wasn't a musician at all, was in the band as kind of a performance artist.
		The crowd was really cranky and pissed by then, chanting 'PIL, PIL, PIL!' I was in the control booth with my headphones, nice and snug in there in the back of the club with a beautiful view of the audience and the stage: I felt like I was manning the Starship Enterprise.

		I love this album and i love P.I.L, but you people dont understand the greatness of the Sex pistols, a lot of u just want to say you hate the Pistols because you want to be artsy and have a Image of yourself, and I'm saying that as an artist.
		PiL were one of the best post punk bands in the 1980's and they have been sorely overlooked by people lately.

		PiL's John Lydon managed to get entirely lost, after the great music and earlier bandmembers were well out of the picture.
