Public Image Ltd. - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Public Image Ltd. (PiL) is a rock music band formed in 1978 by John Lydon, also known as Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols.
PiL is often cited as one of the most challenging and innovative bands of the post punk period.
PiL's elusiveness lent it a thick mystique, but to those behind the curtain it was known as "the laziest band in the world" -- never rehearsing, rarely gigging (the original band only played five UK shows), and recording only when forced to by frantic record execs.

Cooler Than You: Public Image, Ltd. (column)
With Public Image, Ltd., however, after the tremendous promise and achievement of their first three records, Public Image (First Edition) in particular, what they produced post-Levene gives one the distinct feeling that, if not cheated, one is certainly being betrayed.
With Keith Levene on guitar, Jah Wobble on bass, and Jim Walker on the traps, Public Image, Ltd., produced a kind of music that seems inevitable in the wake of punk.
Public Image (First Edition) opens with "Theme" (which is kind of funny since the album also has a song called "Public Image," but more on that later).

Firecracker Magazine - Public Image LTD.
Public Image continued to be cutting edge with their (drums and vocals only) third album "Flowers of Romance," but as the original members left, Lydon turned to more commercial means and ruined the Public Image Ltd. reputation for the future.
Modern bands as diverse as Fugazi and Radiohead still bear the influence of "Metal Box" both sonically (breaking all the rules) and philosophically (keeping total control of their art).
Their debut album "First Issue" is great, but it was number two, 1979's "Metal Box," that really hit the mark.

This was scary, particularly the image of frail little Jeanette being ripped to pieces by the angry mob.
In one swift and terrifying motion, all of P.I.L's lights and equipment went sliding into the audience, (bouncers risking their lives to save what they could), the battered screen flew up (apparently a move directed from the video booth), and everyone and everything went quite insanely and horrifyingly beserk.
It is also the first time that P.I.L. has actually done what they've always said they were going to do, actually lived up to and acted on everything they claim to stand for and have stated that they wanted to achieve.

Public Image Limited protested, but Warner Bros. stood fast and the band ultimately relented; in the early weeks of January 1979 the whole of First Issue was re-recorded for the American market.
But Warner Bros., the American label to which Public Image Limited were signed, was unhappy with the album, particularly in that the label felt the bass was mixed too loudly -- no one had ever recorded the bass so hot on a regular LP before.
Like it or not, Public Image Limited's First Issue (aka Public Image) was an album that helped set the pace for what eventually became known as post-punk.

I really, really like this album...When I saw Public Image for the first time, this is what they sounded like....It's stark and the fidelity is really not that good, but it does have this strange, hypnotic effect....I play this more than any other PIL album.
"Public Image", the song, is the hit single material here, and what a single it is. "Low Life" and "Attack" both recall the Sex Pistols more than a little musically, but Lydon's lyrics were already moving past the calculated politically-incorrectisms of "Bollocks" - although "Attack" has substandard lyrics.
I'd only heard the Public Image single prior to this but the metal CD case was just too tempting to ignore.

CD Review: Public Image Limited Plastic Box
Public Image Limited was founded in 1978 mere months after the chaotic demise of the Sex Pistols.
They continually changed their sound, ideas, image and purpose (not to mention band members, including: Martin Atkins, Steve Vai and John McGeoch) throughout the next 15 years successfully touching on a diverse array of styles: unclassifiable, pop, dance and hard rock/metal, all graced with Lydon's caterwaul vocals.
The packaging is really cool: a double thick jewel case with 'plastic box' and PiL logos emblazoned on the front and back (each of the cds has a brightly colored PiL logo as well) in a plastic slip case cover.

 PUBLIC IMAGE LTD.
Forming Public Image Ltd. was John Lydon's get-out clause from the increasingly restrictive pantomime of the Sex Pistols.
The debut album, Public Image (1978), was split between tracks like "Low Life" and "Public Image", which took their lead from Pistols-style, chainsaw pop, and more interesting material like "Theme" - all oppressive low-end sludge - and "Annalisa", which harked back to the Stooges while anticipating the Birthday Party's most unbalanced demolitions.
Any assumptions that PiL were simply going to replay the punk wars were laid to rest on their next album, Metal Box (1979).

'Public Image' is the song that shows that Lydon was himself, and he was not a product of McClaren's pop-machinations - it's also a timeless statement of individuality, like the greatest rock& roll ('Like a Rolling Stone','Search & Destroy','Hand in Glove','Blank Generation','Bring the Noise' etc).
Early PiL is, without a doubt, immensely greater than the mess that became the band in the late 80's, early 90's.

Public Image Ltd.'s sound, aimed to be outside of rock, helped to lay the foundations for later postpunk acts, though the band would shift to more pop-influenced sounds in later years.
In the wake of the Sex Pistols' breakup, John Lydon soon assembled Public Image Ltd, though PiL bore little resemblance to the Pistols' punk attack.
With a moaned and clipped delivery, Lydon's vocals were as disorienting as the radically low bass and screechy guitars accompanying it.

Although the only part of the act that does mention "public domain" does not speak to whether authors have the right to dedicate their work to the public domain, the remainder of the committee report does not say that they intended copyright should be an indestructible form of property.
However, once it is disclosed to the public, the former secret enters public domain, although the former secret may still be patented in the United States [if it is not barred] by the public-use bar or on-sale bar of 35 U.S.C. 102(b).
"Public domain equivalent licenses" are not at all equivalent in some countries outside the United States because authors cannot write language into their licenses that would guarantee users that they would not be sued in the future by the author.
