The Public Record Office (PRO) was established in 1838 to reform the keeping of government and court records which were being kept, sometimes in poor conditions, in a variety of places.
The growing size of the archives held by the PRO and by government departments led to the Public Records Act 1958, which established standard procedures for the selection of documents of historical importance to be kept by the PRO.
The National Archives of Scotland and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland were and remain entirely separate institutions.

Public Records, for the purposes of this guidance, are the records of central government in the United Kingdom and its constituent countries, and of the central courts of law, including bodies under the government such as the national museums, the National Health Service, and national regulatory authorities.
Public Records are preserved in The National Archives, the National Archives of Scotland, the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland and some 240 places of deposit in England and Wales appointed by the Keeper of Public Records (such as local authority record offices, national museums and galleries and the archives of specialised public record-creating bodies).
Public Record Repositories retain the right to determine the means by which copies of Public Records are made available in fulfilment of their statutory responsibility and, furthermore, reserve the right to charge for the provision of such copies.

Records were removed from Burlington and Perth Amboy and housed in this building and placed in the care of the Secretary of State.
As a result of a Report on the Condition of the Public Records of the State of New Jersey by a Committee of Citizens, followed by several years of lobbying, the Public Record Office was created in 1920.
In 1945, the Public Record Office officially became part of the State Library and its name was changed to the Bureau of Archives and History.

The exercise of every Department´s responsibility under the [Public Records] Act is to be in the hands of a Departmental Record Officer, responsible to the Establishment Officer for controlling the disposal and knowing the whereabouts of all its records.
The [Public Records] Act lays down that documents selected for preservation shall be sent to the Public Record Office [The National Archives] not later than 30 years after their creation; but that their transfer may, for administrative or other special reasons, be postponed with the Lord Chancellor´s approval (s.3(4)).
Records which are not suitable for preservation should be sent for destruction as soon as they cease to be required for administrative purposes.

The records date from the establishment of the Port Phillip District in the mid 1830s and include information relating to areas of activity managed or regulated by government such as the administration of justice, immigration, health and welfare, land, education, Indigenous communities, planning, transport, and resource management.
To request copies of a public record a researcher or their representative views and marks up the record they wish to be copied, fills out a copy order form and pays for the order.
Records closed under s11 of the Act may have been microfilmed or digitised and may be available through PROV Reading Rooms.

Most of the records of service for men who served in the ranks of the British Army during the period 1914-1920 were destroyed by enemy action in 1940.
Records of Army Officers for the period 1914-1921/1922 are now available at the PRO for public inspection.
The Public Record Office holds certain service medal and award rolls of the British Army in the First World War (record class WO 329), the information contained in the rolls and indexes to them is limited to what was required to record an individual's medal entitlement.
