THE PUBLIC PURPOSE (Wendell Cox Consultancy)
The Public Purpose is not opposed to urban rail.
This publication, added in May 1999, is similar to a the comparison of Seattle and Portland which has been one of the most popular documents, with more than 5,000 downloads on The Public Purpose and Demographia websites.
The Public Purpose principal, Wendell Cox, argues that new light rail systems are not justified in the United States because they fail to achieve their principal public objective, reduction of traffic congestion.

Public light bus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A green public minibus awaiting at the station at Tsim Sha Tsui.
Public light buses (公共小型巴士, 小巴; widely referred to as minibuses, or sometimes maxicabs (tourist name); a de facto jitney), colloquially called vans in both Chinese and English, run the length and breadth of Hong Kong, through areas which the standard bus lines cannot or do not reach as frequently, quickly or directly.
The popularity of public light bus services in Hong Kong is due to the high population densities which are needed to support the extensive network of minibus routes.

--==[ 10 things I have learned about Public transport ]==--
The 'work-experience' bus driver is a bit of a worry - not knowing the route and having nominal control of a heavy vehicle is the stuff of white-knuckle journeys through unfamiliar suburbs as we weave and turn in an attempt to re-join the route we accidentally deviated from.
Social ettiquette on a bus is fascinating - kids (concessional riders) sit and religiously avoid looking at anyone unless they make eye-contact with the little old lady struggling to remain standing as the bus hurtles around the corner.
The bus will not drive forward if the doors are open - one bus stop on our route has a kerb that rides a little high and freaks out the rear-door sensor - hence the need to re-boot the bus - gotta love high-tech.

ADFC on bicycles in bus lanes
Bus lanes serve to increase the speed of bus travel, and also, when open to bicyclists, to increase that of bicycle travel.
Bus lanes which are open to bicyclists should be either so wide that bicyclists are overtaken by buses without risk, or so narrow that overtaking is only possible by merging into the next lane.
The administrative regulation in the traffic law accounts for the particular importance of public transportation by requiring that the installation of special lanes for transit buses must conform to "procedures for projects." The bus lines therefore have the opportunity to bring their objections before the transportation department.

Public Transit: A Bad Product at a Bad Price
Unwilling to face this reality, public transit’s devotees are busy repackaging an early loser in the race (trolleys), hoping that a new name (light rail) and a new public relations campaign can persuade people that the tax increases needed to try to resuscitate this dinosaur are necessary.
Light rail compares even more unfavorably with auto transportation where private passenger vehicles currently pay more than 100% of their share of the cost of the road system.
If all of the light rail passengers would have otherwise been driving their own cars, light rail would, on average, be removing three cars in 1,000 from the roads.

Metro bus shelters may be exposed to the open air, but they're still subject to the statewide smoking ban.
County authorities said, however, that they've determined the ban also applies to bus shelters, which are structures but aren't normally thought of as buildings because they're open on at least one side.
Even though bus shelters are partly open to the air, "there's no safe level of secondhand smoke, and it's a proven killer," he said.

 The Regional Economist
Proponents of light rail argue that rail transit increases community well-being by creating jobs, boosting economic development and property values, and reducing pollution and traffic congestion—all while providing drivers with an economical alternative to the automobile.
To permanently reduce traffic congestion, policies must be enacted that force each driver to bear the full cost of his or her automobile usage rather than constructing costly public projects that only add to the overall inefficiency of a city’s transportation system.
While providing public transit to the poor does produce tangible economic benefits, the following example suggests that light rail is not an efficient means of providing transportation to the poor.

Whiteread's House was a natural extension of her inverted casts of domestic objects such as mattresses, chairs, tables and water bottles that grew in scale to include the cast of a single room, Ghost, which was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1994.
Whiteread became preoccupied with the possibility of a public sculpture maintaining a presence within an urban environment without imposing its own physicality on the community.
