This is part of a one year project that Cole Campbell, dean of the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno and I are hosting in conjunction with the Public Journalism Network (PJNet.org) and Civic Journalism Interest Group in the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).

I think I may say for all of us who worked on the book in so many different ways, both on this edition and on earlier ones, that we all regard this encyclopedia less as a book than as a kind of public trust.
