A modern book or periodical publishing company (or publisher) is the gateway through which authors must pass to see their work in print (whether hard copy or electronic).
The purpose of copyright is to protect the capital invested in the "work" by the publisher and the wish of the scholar is to have the work as widely distributed as possible.
The general complaint is that conglomerates or large corporations have bought and merged a significant number of key publishing houses or bookstores.

The Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG) has been recently sued by a university publishing house after it objected to the use of the word "Olympic" in some of the publisher's books, according to reports from Xiandai Express, a Nanjing-based local newspaper.
The Nanjing University Press claims the BOCOG's objection to its use of the word "Olympic" on covers of reference books guiding primary school students to learn English was unfounded.
In July 2003, the printing of some reference books published by the Nanjing University Press was halted by local departments in southern Hunan Province for using the word "Olympic" on the book cover with no authorization from the BOCOG.
