PUBLIUS CORNELIUS LENTULUS, nicknamed SURA, one of the chief figures in the Catilinarian conspiracy.
Lentulus was compelled to abdicate his praetorship, and, as it was feared that there might be an attempt to rescue him, he was put to death in the Tullianum on the 5th of December 63.
Lentulus played a prominent part in the recall of Cicero from exile, and although a temporary coolness seems to have arisen between them, Cicero speaks of him in most grateful terms.

In 70, being expelled from the senate with a number of others for immorality, he joined Catiline.
Relying upon a Sibylline oracle that three Cornelii should be rulers of Rome, Lentulus regarded himself as the destined successor of Lucius Cornelius Sulla and Lucius Cornelius Cinna.

 LUCIUS SERGIUS CATILINA
The most distinguished was Publius Cornelius Lentulus Sura, a consular who had been expelled from the Senate in 70 B.C. By 63 B.C. he had rehabilitated himself and became praetor, and was thus with Catiline able to bring some standing to the revolutionary leaders.
Freedmen, too, were among the members of the conspiracy, notably Publius Umbrenus who had been a businessman in Gaul; but Catiline in spite of the urging of his colleagues refused to the end to raise a slave revolt.
At the request of Lentulus, a certain Umbrenus who had been engaged on business in Gaul approached the envoys with the proposal that if they supported the conspiracy their grievances would be remedied.

The allusion to the evil conspirators Lucius Sergius Catilina and the members of the house of the Cornelii—Publius Cornelius Cethegus, Publius Cornelius Lentulus Sura, Publius and Servius Cornelius Sulla—would not have been lost on Livy's audience.
The achievements of Cicero, and especially his suppression of the conspiracy, were eulogized in an epic poem by Cornelius Severus, and Lucan invokes the eloquence of Cicero, "beneath whose authority fierce Catiline trembled" (2.541).
