		Puccini is celebrated, on the other hand, for his melodic gift, and many of his melodies are both memorable and enduringly popular.

		Scandal was unleashed in 1909 when a servant girl of the Puccinis, whom Elvira had accused of an intimate relationship with her husband, committed suicide.
		A court case established the girl's innocence, but the publicity affected Puccini deeply and was the main reason for the long period before his next opera.
		Puccini's choral, orchestral and instrumental works, dating mainly from his early years, are unimportant, though the Mass in A-flat (1880) is still performed occasionally.

		Edgar, when it appeared in 1889, was a failure, but Ricordi's faith was justified in 1893 by Manon Lescaut, in which the mature Puccini is already evident in the ardent and profuse melodic mastery which distinguishes the work.
		Nothing illustrates Puccini's instinctive theatrical skill more remarkably than the success with which he achieved the difficult feat of combining three contrasting 1-act operas in Il trittico (Triptych): a thriller in Il tabarro, a sentimental tragedy in Suor Angelica, and a comedy in Gianni Schicchi.

	Puccini: Madama Butterfly
		The story upon which the libretto of Puccini's Madama Butterfly is based is an amalgam of a narrative by John Luther Long, a Philadelphia lawyer, and the play derived from that narrative by playwright and theatrical producer, David Belasco.
		Lieutenant Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton (the name itself is an ironic accentuation of his role as the American intruder) of the United States Navy marries the young Cho-Cho-San, nicknamed "Madam Butterfly," and forces her to relinquish all ties to her friends and family.
		Coupled with Puccini's emotionally charged musical score, Madama Butterfly produces an effect at once intimate and overwhelming, a haunting portrayal of the dangers of misguided love.

		She goes through almost the entire Puccini catalog of heroines--Mimi and Musetta, Liu, Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, Liu and Turandot, Lauretta, Suor Angelica, Minnie (from Fanciulla), as well as the gals from La Rondine, Edgar, and Le Villi, and her exquisite, fine-grained, unique sound--with its dusky lower register--is always interesting and beautifully inflected.
		This Puccini arias/scenes disc has beautiful singing from Gheorghiu, however, I find a sameness in her singing, whether she be singing an aria from Butterfly or Turandot.
		He seems to love every note Puccini wrote (which is understandable!), but his pacing undermines the drama in some of these selections.
