Lewis's argument for Christianity is overwhelmingly powerful, no more so than in "The Silver Chair", when Puddleglum argues with the green serpent-witch about the validity of his world, which she was trying very hard to make him unbelieve.
He says (paraphrased) that even if Narnia should be a playworld with grand images that were merely built upon the dreary "real" things in the witch's world, he would rather believe in that worthy world than have to live in the cheerless Underworld.
The comically pessimistic Puddleglum becomes touchingly serious in this scene as he struggles against the witch's spell; the reader however, feels with his words that the enchantment is immediately broken.

(Read on.) Now, Puddleglum is one of my favorite Narnians, and one of Lewis's most amusing creations, and, certainly his most distinctive non-protagonist: prominent for his sardonic Eeyore-like negativism, as well as his stalwart faith in Aslan.
Well, let us just say that Lewis was the least likely author to imagine a universe in which giants are persuaded to give up their carnivorous inclinations because a Marshwiggle has asked them to play a game to distract them.

 SF REVIEWS.NET: The Silver Chair / C. S. Lewis
Little does he know that Aslan is already on the job, putting the children on the quest for Rilian, in the company of an amusingly pessimistic but generally brave and chatty marsh-wiggle (a lanky fellow with frog's feet) named Puddleglum.
The story moves much more smoothly than that of Prince Caspian or Voyage, and with the level of substance to his worldcraft that Lewis also gave The Horse and His Boy (which, in the actual writing order of things, he would publish next).
Even Puddleglum's comical cynicism has some layers, as we understand it's merely his way of compensating for fears that he doesn't even realize he's perfectly brave enough to face.
