Puerto Barrios was founded in the 1880s by President Rufino Barrios.
Puerto Barrios is now a seedy port town of about 50 thousand inhabitants and with not much for the average tourist to see.

I returned and went to the small fishermen village of Puerto Castilla, entered a place where a lady offered beer (to call it bar or restaurant is a little bit exaggerated), asked her to serve me a “Salva Vida” and if there is anybody who can take me on a boat trip to the bay.
I returned to the village and we tried again, there was a stiff wind from the west, the sea was going high, we where about 1,5 km away from the confluence when waves made it impossible to stay on course with our small open fishing boat.

Tegucigalpa is served by secondary roads to the north and east, while San Pedro Sula is connected both to the important Caribbean ports of Puerto Cortés, Tela, and Trujillo and to the western Mayan shrine site of Copán.
Another Caribbean port, Roatán, is offshore, in the Bay Islands; and Puerto de Henecán, on the Pacific coast, opened in 1979, replacing Amapala as a port facility, although the latter retains a naval base.

My son and I had booked a self-catering holiday at Hyde Park Apartments, Puerto del Carmen, these apparently were closed for re-furbishment and we were re-allocated to Don Paco-Castilla, Playa de los Pocillos.
Yes the taxi fare to Puerto del Carmen is very reasonable (about 3-4 Euros), but that's still quite quiet.
We stayed at Don Paco in may 2004, we found the staff bright and friendly, the apartment was very clean and was kept clean by a maid who cleaned every day !.
