PUERTO RICO HERALD: How should a New Yorker, an American citizen, proud of his or her Puerto Rican heritage, react to the victories or defeats of athletes representing the USA and Puerto Rico?
Several years ago, Puerto Rico's Superior Basketball League, judged him to be "non-Puerto Rican," when he played for the Caguas Criollos, even though he was born in Puerto Rico, of Puerto Rican parents and lived on the island until the age of 8 before moving with his family to Brooklyn, New York.
Puerto Rican sports authorities have traditionally "free lanced" when it came to deciding who is or is not Boricua in international competitions.
The composition of the Puerto Rico team is mostly made up of players who have temporarily packed away their jerseys from professional teams in the United States or elsewhere to represent the island of their birth, residency or cultural identification.

PUERTO RICO HERALD: What person or group merits recognition as the Herald’s top entity of 2004?
The Puerto Rican Basketball Team of 2004 proved to be giant killers and Puerto Rican sports heroes for their victory in the first game of the Olympics in Greece in August.
Nearly all of the National Guard and Reserves from the island have been mobilized since the start of the War on Terrorism and twenty-three Puerto Ricans have been killed in that war, the most recent on December 27, in Baghdad.
Puerto Rican soldiers have been faithful and efficient combatants under the American flag in every war in which their country has fought since they received US citizenship in 1917.

 Articles - Basketball
If a team surpasses a preset limit of team fouls in a given period – four in international and NBA games, seven in high school and college games – the opposing team is awarded free throws on all subsequent fouls for that period (or, in college and high school, the remainder of the half).
Spin-offs from basketball include baseketball, which has some elements of baseball, korfball, which was born in Holland and is played by mixed teams, netball, which was informally called "women& basketball" but now includes men's teams, slamball, and ringball.
Basketball is unusual in that it was invented by one man, rather than evolving from a different sport.

Outside The Beltway : Why Puerto Rico Has Its Own Olympic Team
Puerto Ricans do pay taxes, but they dont participate in the US elections while they’re living in Puerto Rico, but if they are living in the US they can because its they’re right as US citizens.
Puerto Rico has their own team because it’s no a state, it’s a COMMONWEALTH, all COMMONWEALTHS have they’re own Olympic team, I dont see whats the questioning in either PR has or hasnt an Olympic team, for me its absurd to even question about that.
Puerto Rico can send athletes to Greece because the International Olympic Committee, the governing body that makes all decisions about the administration and operation of the games, has recognized the island's National Olympic Committee.

Competitive Intelligence: 2004 Summer Olympiad Opens in Athens — U.S. Basketball Taken to the Woodshed
Puerto Rico's 40-year-old center, José Ortiz, all but cautioned the United States team that this had better be the last time the Americans play a team for chumps.
I didn't need to see Puerto Rico rout the United States to know that the world is playing great basketball; didn't need to see the United States shoot 35 percent to know that the team we've sent to the Olympics has no outside shooter, and maybe only an outside shot at the gold medal.
This was about a veteran Puerto Rican team wanting to win a gold medal and beginning the journey by beating a team that had beaten it like a drum.

InterBasket.net - Larry Ayuso, Puerto Rico
Larry Ayuso, who plays basketball for the Puerto Rican national team, moved to New Mexico and to a new life as a teenager.
She began putting him in his place 10 years ago, which is a large part of the reason he will be representing the Puerto Rican national team tonight, rather than hanging out on a street corner in the South Bronx.
Then he gets a contract to play in the Puerto Rico league with the Quebradillas Piratas, later being traded to the San German Atleticos, where he has a breakout year, earning himself a spot with the Puerto Rico NT in 2001.

People's Weekly World Newspaper Online - Why Puerto Ricans were celebrating
For Puerto Ricans, participating in international athletic events is an affirmation of their own nationality, as much as when the Puerto Rican sports authorities (or literary, educational, and economic agencies) protest U.S. State Department denials of visas to Cubans to prevent them from taking part in Puerto Rican activities.
In Puerto Rico the right-wing leaders who want this island nation to be annexed as a state by the U.S. define Puerto Ricans as an ethnic group within the American nation.
In Puerto Rico “sports independence” doesn’t only mean not having either the government or the political establishment of your own country interfering with athletics, it also means having one’s own national sporting life free and separate from the colonizing country — the United States.

 Dream Team
However, Dream Team IV, which is currently participating in the 2004 Olympics, already lost a game to the Puerto Rican National Basketball Team, the first defeat ever for a Dream Team in the Olympics.
The invincibility of the Americans officially disappeared on August 15, 2004 when the Puerto Rican National Basketball Team defeated "Dream Team IV" 92-73 in the very first game of the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
The team is a "Dream Team" because of the fact that it is composed of NBA Players, but it is possible the media will never oficially recognize them as Dream Team IV after the events that occurred in pre-Olympic friendlies and the first Preliminary Round of the Olympics Game.
