In Khao Sam Roi Yot National park on the coast of the Gulf of Siam can be found a fine selection of wintering palearctic waders: the oriental pratincole, greater and lesser sand plover and with luck, the Malaysian plover and Nordmann’s greenshank.
Other species that can be seen around the coast include the white-bellied sea eagle, puff throated babbler and mangrove whistler.
Further south one highlight is Khao Pra Bang Khram reserve, where there is a good chance of spotting the critically endangered Gurney’s Pitta as well as other rainforest dwellers such as the fl hornbill, green hornbill, rufous-collared kingfisher and red-bearded bee-eater.

Under Sibley and Monroe the Sylviinae represent the main body of babblers, minus the laughing thrushes, which are now placed in the Garrulacinae.
The naming of this new slimmed down Sylviinae presents some problems, particularly in Vietnamese, where both the Sylviinae and the Garrulacinae have a claim to the name Khướư.
Khướư is a general term for the 'laughing thrushes' and 'babblers'.

They covered themselves with so much dust that a puff of dust arose from them when they flew and landed in a nearby tree and later when the left this tree to fly to another.

 Birdwatching Trip Report from Lowland Nepal
Dayglow Long-tailed Minivets decorated the trees and Red-vented Bulbuls, overall the commonest bird of the trip, seemed to be everywhere, unlike the scarcer Himalayan Bulbul with its Elvis style quiff.
As it left the track we approached again until we were no more than 20 yards away from its head hiding in the grasses, before it turned tail and disappeared.
A ‘ten minute stroll’ after lunch must have taken at least an hour, there were so many birds to see, like the Blue-throated Barbet we had ‘on a plate’ as it feasted on a fruiting bush barely 10 yards away at eye level.

Phil scored a near jackpot with fleeting glimpses of a Blyth's Tragopan in a gully near the topmost picnic area but unfortunately this was as close as anyone got to this rare and elusive pheasant.
A group of fruiting trees attracted up to 45 Grey-sided Thrush (surely Mt Victoria is the best place in the world to see this rarity) with smaller numbers of Eyebrowed and Black-breasted Thrush also present.
Abbott's Babbler Malacocincla abbotti : 5 were seen near Ngalaik Reservoir.

I was stopped and questioned by forest Dept. personnel but allowed to proceed when I explained that I only intended to watch birds.
Good birds seen here were Orange-headed Thrush (white throated subspecies cyanotus), Scarlet Minivet, Yellow-browed Bulbul, Puff-throated Babbler and Malabar Whistling Thrush.
Nearing the bottom of the Ghat, Jungle Babbler, Tawny-bellied Babbler and Black-headed Cuckoo Shrike were seen.

Birding is from the tarmac road, in the grid next to the substation and along the Loop and Valley trails.
Food and accommodation are available at the guesthouse 17km from the park entrance and 3km from the summit.
There is a new road under construction which in due course will no doubt disgorge too many people onto the upper part of the mountain and increase the already evident degradation of the site.

Days 14, 15 Kaeng-Krachen National Park is the largest park in Thailand and borders Myanmar at the crest of the mountains.
We did however see the rare red- bearded Stump-tailed Macaque descend from a tree to the ground while we were hiding.
Highlights included three species of Broadbill including a Long-tailed Broadbill on a nest, a calling Ratchet-tailed Treepie and good looks at the Spot-necked Babbler and Buff-breasted Babbler.

There is a small canteen at the Research Station for meals, alternatively the nearest town is Sungai Golok, which is close enough to stay in and commute to the forests.
Highlights were: Bathawk (nesting near the accomodation), two or more Rail-babblers, Javan Frogmouth, seven species of Hornbill recorded and a profusion of Broadbills and Babblers.

Peter and Neil had White-hooded Babbler here after we left, in the vicinity of the water-tank and a few km further on, just beyond where the path splits into three, in bamboo along the left branch - Collared Owlet and Streaked Wren-Babbler were also here.
An early morning trek up to the steps to the transmitter proved a waste of time and the steps were very busy the rest of the day, so again no Niltava.
We did locate a pair of Crocias, with tape assistance, by taking the left-hand trail up the long log, continuing up and then down to where a log, with 1998 carved on it, crosses the trail; keeping left, uphill to the crest at 1320m, the Crocias were 100-200m beyond the crest.

Finally back at the campground we had lunch (food must be brought into the park) and enjoyed a pair of Common Flameback, Gray-headed Woodpecker and Lesser Yellownape.
Next morning after having slept in our tents (other lodging is available at headquarters as well as outside the park) we went back to this area.
I again tried my tapes but with no gain except for a Spot-necked Babbler that was curious to see who was calling.

In open country like this, more eyes are a positive benefit and we soon succeeded in seeing both Ashy-crowned Sparrow-lark and Oriental Lark, both local and difficult species, together with Tawny Pipits.
On the return journey to the camp for lunch, we saw a White-rumped Shama by the river and, during the lunch break, a Brown Shrike was seen by a few and Heart Spotted Woodpecker by everyone.
In the late afternoon, we took a leisurely walk through the forest adding both Dark-fronted Babbler and Brown-cheeked Fulvetta before reaching the river where the remains of a Brown Fish Owl's meal was found.
