Russet-throated Puffbird - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Russet-throated Puffbird (Hypnelus ruficollis) is a near-passerine bird which breeds in tropical South America in northeastern Colombia and much of Venezuela.
The puffbirds are an insectivorous bird family related to the jacamars, but lacking the iridescent colours of that group.
The Russet-throated Puffbird is fairly common in dry scrub and dry forest.

The puffbirds' and their relatives in the near passerine bird family Bucconidae are tropical near passerine birds from South America, extending up to Mexico.
They are related to the jacamars, but lack the iridescent colours of that family.
Like most of their relatives, this group are hole nesters, laying 2-3 white eggs in a hole in the ground or a termite mound.

Change English name of Notharchus hyperrhynchus
In such cases, I think that it is most common to retain the established name for the nominate form of the species.
The established English name of "White-necked Puffbird" was based on the prominence of the wide white hindcollar of hyperrhynchus and paraensis, which collectively, occupied the vast majority of the range of what was N.
Also, since hyperrhynchus is by far the more widespread and familiar (to ornithologists and birders) form to which the name "White-necked Puffbird" has been applied, it would be most fitting for that name to stay with hyperrhynchus rather than with macrorhynchos.

Change English name of Notharchus macrorhynchos
is yet another fl-and-white puffbird that represents a variation on the common theme of the genus Notharchus.
At the same time, the use of "White-necked Puffbird" as a group name (as in "Western White-necked Puffbird" and "Eastern White-necked Puffbird") would not only be awkward and ugly, but would probably be misleading in the sense that I do not believe (based on vocal characters) that macrorhynchos and hyperrhynchus/paraensis are one-anthers' closest relatives.
Given that macrorhynchos is found only in E Venezuela, the Guianas, and extreme N Brazil south to the left bank of the Amazon, it is essentially a Guianan bird, and the only member of its family restricted to that geographic area.

Finally, among the birds frequently seen from the overlooks on this trail are tanagers, jacamars, Swallow-winged Puffbird, Long-tailed Tyrant, and others.
The Ocelot Trail, covering a 300 hundred year old sample of floodplain forest, your stereotypical "rain forest", is a good birding trail for forest birds and some wading and lakeside birds which live close to the small freshwater ponds.
Finally the palm swamp at the edge of these hills houses a few species that are hard or impossible to find in other habitats, principally Striped Woodcreeper, Dull-rumped Attila and the Point-tailed Palmcreeper, an elegant ovenbird which is rarely found outside palm swamps.

The Spotted Puffbird with its fl bill, red iris, orange forehead, throat and upper chest, white malar stripe and fl patch on the side of its neck is unlikely to be confused.
Its preferred habitat seems to be gallery forest, the edges of várzea forest and Mauritia palm groves which is where these birds were found.
Like most puffbirds, they can be hard to spot because they spend a lot of time motionless.
