An on-crossing detector will ensure that the signal for vehicles remains red until the pedestrians have finished crossing (within practical limits).
A kerb-side detector will cancel the pedestrian demand should the pedestrian move away from the kerb side, when the pedestrian is crossing in a gap or does not use the crossing.

Toucan crossing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A toucan crossing is a type of pedestrian crossing found in the UK that also allows bicycles to cross.
Toucan crossings are normally 4 metres (13 feet) wide, instead of the 2.8 metre (9 feet) width of a Pelican or Puffin.
The pedestrian/cyclist signal lights may be on the near side of the crossing (like a Puffin), or on the opposite side of the road (like a Pelican).

Crossings have red/amber/green signals facing drivers, and red man/green man signal heads on the opposite side of the road to the pedestrians waiting to cross.
Crossings without these bleepers may be fitted with a tactile rotating knob under the push button unit, which rotates when the green man is illuminated.
Crossings are designed for both pedestrians and cyclists and are typically used adjacent to a cycle-path (Cyclists are not allowed to cross the road using Zebra, Pelican or Puffin crossings).

Because 'Puffin' is defined by the Zebra, Pelican and Puffin Pedestrian Crossings Regulations and General Directions 1997, it cannot apply in a legal sense to a pedestrian facility at a junction that uses nearside pedestrian signals.
The sequence for the pedestrian signals is consistent with a stand-alone Puffin crossing.
