Puffing Billy is a narrow gauge (2'6") steam operated railway in the Dandenong Ranges near Melbourne.
The Victorian Railways closed it in April 1954.
In 1962 the Puffing Billy Preservation Society was created and now operares daily as a popular tourist activity over 24km with original steam engines and rolling stock.

Puffing Billy is a steam-operated narrow-gauge railway running in the Dandenong Ranges forty kilometres to the east of Melbourne city centre.
When Victorian Railways found that its 5 feet 3 inches gauge was not suitable for sparsely populated hill areas, it constructed four railways to a 2 feet 6 inches narrow gauge, a gauge not used elsewhere in Australia and one which confused the railway compatibility situation even further.
A diversion around the affected area was built in 1959, and on 28th July 1962 the band of volunteers succeeded in running their first Puffing Billy train as far as Menzies Creek.

The railway was originally one of four experimental narrow gauge lines of the Victorian Railways opened around the beginning of the 20th century.
The railway aims to preserve the line as far as possible as it was in the first three decades of its existence, but with particular emphasis on the early 1920s.
Today the railway operates daily (except for Christmas day) as a popular tourist activity over 15 miles (24km) with original steam engines, and is operated with some of the railway practices from the Victorian Railways 1900 to 1930 era, such as using the "Staff and Ticket" safeworking method and having conductors on board the trains.

In days gone by, our State railway system was known as the Victorian Railways, and was run by a group of men known as the Commissioners.
The Original Puffing Billy railway was one of four low-cost narrow gauge railway lines constructed in Victoria at the beginning of the 20th century, to open up remote areas for settlement.
