Puffinus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Puffinus is a genus of seabirds in the order Procellariiformes.
Despite the resemblance in the name, the puffins are auks, and completely unrelated to the shearwaters in the genus Puffinus.
The taxonomy of this group is the cause of much debate, and the number of recognised species depends on the source.

Manx Shearwater - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus) is a medium-sized shearwater in the seabird family Procellariidae.
Another bird nearly as old, breeding on Bardsey Island off Wales was calculated by ornithologist Chris Mead to have flown over 8 million km (5 million miles) during its life (this bird was still alive in 2004, having outlived Mead).
The Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus, Yelkouan Shearwater Puffinus yelkouan and Black-vented Shearwater Puffinus opsithomelas were formerly considered to be races of this species, but each is now regarded as a full monotypic species.

Puffinus huttoni-P. gavia, P. nativitatis, and P. subalaris are basal to this.
Difficulties in procellariiform taxonomy are particularly evident in the Little-Audubon's Shearwater complex (Puffinus assimilislherminieri).
Given that levels of genetic divergence among members of the complex are similar to those among the larger Puffinus shearwaters and that most of the described subspecies (identified on morphological and other grounds) are also phylogenetically independent lineages, there appears to be little justification for maintaining the current taxonomy.

Annotated List of the Seabirds of the World - Shearwaters
An important difference from the both the Puffinus shearwaters and Procellaria petrels is the strong sexual dimorphism with respect to body size.
Analysis of partial cytochrome b gene sequences suggests that the extant Puffinus species are derived from two ancestral groups that separared soon after the divergence of Puffinus from the shearwater ancestral stock (Austin, 1996).
The genus Puffinus is particularly well represented in the oceans of the world although the greatest abundance and diversity occurs in the cool waters surrounding Australia and New Zealand (Marchant and Higgins, 1990).

At the Skokholm Island Bird Observatory off Britain's Welsh coast, a pigeon-sized male Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus puffinus) was taking his tour of duty on the family nest last week, none the worse for an epic round-trip Atlantic crossing.
A month before, Puffinus had been delivered to Rosario Mazzeo, staff manager of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and an amateur ornithologist, who was flying back to the U.S. from a European visit.
Puffinus, if he followed the custom of his species, rested occasionally on the water or stopped in a likely spot to refuel with plankton, small water creatures found just below the ocean's surface.

Galapagos has a new endemic seabird species
This bird has been known in Galapagos for more than 100 years, but was considered an endemic subspecies of Audubon's Shearwater and had the scientific name Puffinus lherminieri subalaris.
The American Ornithologists' Union's South American Classification Committee (SACC; http://www.museum.lsu.edu/~Remsen/SACCBaseline.html) has recently accepted a change in taxonomy of shearwaters that includes a change in the name of the shearwater that lives in Galapagos.

 split Ardenna from Puffinus
The within-groups Tamura-Nei distance for Puffinus (in the narrower sense) was 5.38% (SD 2.03); the within-groups mean for Ardenna was 4.75% (SD 1.51).
Wolters (1975-82) recognised two genera within the group of larger shearwaters (although griseus and tenuirostris remained in Puffinus): Ardenna Reichenbach 1853, to which he assigned gravis and carneipes, with creatopus as a subspecies; and Thyellodroma Stejneger 1888, to which he assigned pacificus and bulleri (1975-82: 36).
In this case (in contrast to 190 and 191) there is indeed a phenotypic character that is concordant with the phylogeny.

In 1934 the Newell's shearwater was classified as a subspecies of the Manx shearwater (Puffinus puffinus puffinus), resulting in the trinomial Puffinus p.
In 1952 Murphy concluded that newelli was closer to typical puffinus, of the Atlantic, than to its nearest neighbor, auricularis, of the Pacific (07).

Several species enter coastal waters at this time, among these are the Wedge-tailed Shearwater, Puffinus pacificus, Wilson's Storm-petrel, Oceanites oceanicus, Lesser Frigatebird, Fregata ariel, Brown Skua, Catharacta antarctica, Pomarine Skua, Stercorarius pomarinus, Brown Noddy, Anous stolidus, Lesser Noddy, Anous tenuirostris.
These birds leave their breeding grounds in South-west Australia each May and embark on a lengthy "continuous migration" which takes them north and west to the Arabian Sea and thence southwards past Sri Lanka, back to their homes in time for the next breeding season.
(It is interesting to note that as a sighting of Sooty Shearwaters, Puffinus griseus, has come from the east coast, individuals could possibly turn up on the west coast, hence birdwatchers should be on the alert for this species).

 The Shearwaters (The Procellariidae)
The name 'Shearwater' arises from the habit of some species of flying and gliding close to the surface of the sea.
One of the most widespread and best known Shearwaters is the Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus)Which can be found offshore around the UK and as far north as Iceland, in the Mediterranean, around North America and around New Zealand.
In Australia both adult and chicks of the Short-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris) or Mutton-birds are taken for food, their down and the oil in their stomachs for many years.

The most surprising finding is that subalaris is not only in a lineage different from that of the Audubon's Shearwater, where it is traditionally placed, but it is also outside the Little/Audubon's complex and well-differentiated from the entire fl-and-white shearwater assemblage (this includes puffinus, opisthomelas, yelkouan etc.).
If accepted placement of subalaris should be between Puffinus puffinus and the larger shearwaters.

ABSTRACT - In 2000 and 2001, the only known North American breeding colony of Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus) on Middle Lawn Island, Newfoundland was visited.
Breeding was first confirmed in 1977 and by 1981, a minimum of 13 pairs laid eggs.
Manx Shearwaters (Puffinus puffinus) are common breeding seabirds in the northeast Atlantic, with the main colonies occurring in the British Isles (Brooke 1990).
