Christian Century: Radical catholicity - reflections on the life and work of theologian John Howard Yoder
The focus of his dissertation, completed in 1957, was an analysis of the dialogues between the Swiss Anabaptists and the magisterial Reformers in the early 16th century, an exposition that laid bare the theological and hermeneutical assumptions of both sides of the debate.
Not coincidentally, Yoder was a participant at the Puidoux Theological Conference held at the Evangelical Academy near Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1955.
This gathering was the first significant encounter between mainstream Protestant theologians and theologians of the Radical Reformation traditions since the disputations of the early 16th century.

The Train des Vignes (Wine Train) runs hourly from Vevey’s train station on a short but steep line northwest through the Lavaux vineyards that’s especially scenic during the summer and harvest times.
The whole ride is only fifteen minutes, through Corseaux to Chexbres and terminating at the village of Puidoux on the Vaud plateau, itself served by trains between Lausanne and Fribourg.
Much more dramatic is the curving train line from Vevey station up to the vantage point of Les Pléiades, perched in the hills way above the lake at 1364m.

In the course of these discussions and the later Puidoux Conferences it became apparent that this question concerned not only the churches’ actions and peace ethics but much more fundamentally the Church’s structure and reason for being.
Peace churches differ from other churches in that the peace church does not struggle primarily with the temptation of wanting to provide a basic religious structure for a society shaped by violence; rather the peace church sees itself much more as an alternative to this society.
Church and Peace’s early years - the Puidoux Conferences - were a very powerful experience for the participants, many of whom had not heard much positive teaching in their seminaries about the Mennonites and the Quakers.

MCC - Resources & Publications - Occasional Papers - Mennonites in ecumenical dialogue on peace and justice
The centerpiece of this story is the series of Puidoux conferences (1955 to 1962) that brought together mostly younger Peace Church scholars with a number of interested and distinguished European theologians.
The work initiated at Puidoux ended in 1969, but efforts at international dialogue have continued in other settings.
Church and Peace in Europe and the HPC/FOR Consultative Committee in North America continue to monitor and facilitate dialogue.

MCC Peace Section also sponsored Mennonite participation in a series of theological discussions known as the Puidoux conferences, which took place in Europe over more than a decade beginning in 1955.
The conferences grew out of cooperative efforts between Mennonites and other denominations and organizations to present a unified peace position in ecumenical settings.
[16] In addition to the Puidoux meetings, many other inter-Mennonite or more ecumenical peace-related conferences--some sponsored by MCC--took place during the 1950s and 1960s.
