  Puka Puka, Cook Islands
Pukapuka has the distinction of being one of the first of the Cook Islands to be sighted by Europeans.
Pukapuka was proclaimed a British protectorate in 1892 and was included in the Cook Islands boundaries under the control of New Zealand in 1901.
Pukapuka lies far to the north west, nearly 800miles from Rarotonga and \280 miles north east of the Samoa's.

The strain pattern, suggesting N – S tension with a component of right-lateral shear, is expressed only in the distribution of extruded volcanic rocks, and cannot be discerned in the detailed multibeam images of the seabed between volcanic ridges (Figure 4).
Because volcanism is focused in the troughs of gravity rolls, indicating tension in the lithosphere, the rolls are thus viewed as boudins (Figure 5).

Nassau Island is located 693 nautical miles south of the equator, 45 miles S.E. by S. of Pukapuka, 175 miles N.W. of Suvarov, and 290 miles E.E. of Tau Island, American Samoa, (240 from Rose Atoll and 350 from Pago Pago).
The people of Pukapuka believed that they owned Nassau, which they called Te Nuku-o-Ngalewu, after a chief who defended the island against invasion by a warrior from Aitutaki named Tima.

 Pukapuka
Pukapuka is the Cook Island’s western most atoll and is situated relatively close to another Polynesian neighbour, Samoa.
Although the modern day person living on Pukapuka can speak the national language of Cook Island Maori, the island has its own distinct dialect which is closer to Samoan and Micronesian than it is to Cook Island Maori.
Surprisingly for an atoll, a sizeable crop of Taro is grown on the interior of Wale Island, along with a small amount of bananas, papaya and copra.
