Located in the central part of the southern tier of lower Michigan counties, Hillsdale County was named for the terrain which features "hills and dales." A "dale" is a valley, or an elongated depression of the earth's surface commonly situated between ranges of hills or mountains.
Michigan Militia Captain Moses Allen, an enlisted veteran of the War of 1812, was a member of the original survey crew.
Resolved, unanimously, To divide the county into four townships, each township to consist of one range through the county, range 1 to be called Wheatland...; range 2 to be called Moscow...; range 3 to be called Fayette...; range 4 to be called Allen.

 History of Hillsdale County, Michigan - WoodbridgeTwp
The township of Woodbridge, lying in the interior of the county, a little southwest of the centre, was formed from Fayette in 1840.
The entire township was covered, originally, with a heavy growth of timber, chiefly beech, maple, linn, poplar, fl and white ash, with considerable oak, hickory, and fl walnut.
The township has a total area of 19, 228 acres, of which 6000 acres are improved, and in 1874 contained a population of 1386 inhabitants, of whom a large majority are agriculturists.

It was organized in 1853 and included the present nine townships in the southern half of the county.
The townships of Resort and Springvale were formed in 1880, but at the time were in Charlevoix County.
It was not until 1897 that the boundaries of these townships finally stabilized and areas that belonged to Charlevoix County for awhile came back to Emmet County.

He came to Jefferson township in the spring of 1834, and served as one of the first justices of the peace in Williams county.
The territory is well watered, the principle stream being Beaver Creek, which rises in the northern part of the township and flows southward through the central portion of Jefferson to the village of Pulaski; thence through Pulaski into Springfield township, where it joins the Tiffin river.

JOHN COOPER was born in Logansport, Cass Co., Ind., December 18, 1851, one of seven children born to William and Mary (Weible) Cooper, the former a native of Delaware, and the latter of Germany.
Taylor was married in December, 1849, to Calista Tibbits, a native of Michigan.

The property was identified as "the northeast quarter of the northeast quarter of section thirty-four, in township thirty-one, of range one west".
Hugh Shearer, moved to Clinton County May 2, 1859, and bought a farm in Michigan Township where he lived until 1864, when he sold out and went to Howard County, Indiana, and a year later went to Delaware County.
In 1883, Hugh Shearer moved again to a farm in Michigan Township, where he lived about two years and then exchanged his farm for property in Hillisburgh and forty acres of land in Johnson Township.

JOHN C. BREWER was born in North Carolina April 7, 1817, and is the son of William and Elizabeth (Cavaness) Brewer, of whom the former was born in North Carolina in 1768, and the latter in Virginia in 1770.
Having acquaintances in Pulaski County, Ind., the family removed to this place in 1856, settled in Salem Township, engaged actively in farming and stock-raising, and there both parents yet reside.
Kruger engaged in agricultural pursuits in Salem Township, until 1880, when he was chosen by the Greenback party as their candidate for Sheriff of Pulaski County.

The first years of the decade were dominated by development of the Albion-Pulaski- Scipio "Golden Gulch" of southwestern Michigan as oil and gas explorer/producers rushed to fill in the tapestry of well completions in that area.
The September 30, 1960 edition of the Michigan Oil and Gas News reported 23 active drilling units in Calhoun County, 23 in Hillsdale County and 33 in Jackson County.
While the first four companies stayed in northern Michigan, Mobil later shifted their interests to the Niagaran "fairway" to the south, a narrower band looping from about Ottawa County to the west through Eaton, Ingham, Livingston, Oakland and Macomb counties to leave Michigan into Canada at St. Clair County.
