Pulau Ubin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pulau Ubin is a small island (10 km²) situated north east of Singapore, beside Pulau Tekong.
Legend has it that Pulau Ubin was formed when three animals from Singapore (a frog, a pig and an elephant) challenged each other to a race to reach the shores of Johor.
Pulau Ubin's wooden house village and wooden jetty, relaxed inhabitants, rich and preserved wildlife, abandoned quarries and plantations, and untouched nature in general make it the last witness of the old "kampung" Singapore that existed before modern industrial times and development plans.

Though recent government action has been limited to widening the paths for bicycles, building shelters for trekkers and so on for growing numbers of visitors, it is already discreetly changing the face and nature of Pulau Ubin from untouched to planned, and pathing the way to further developments.
The future of the island is in the hands of Singaporean, but its status of witness of a former way of life will most probably disappear with the last "kampung" generation.

And I’m also talking about recent history here: on the Singapore Civil Defence website one of the local disasters cited was the fire on Pulau Merlimau in 1988, which threatened to spread into an island-wide catastrophe (in addition to the Ginza Plaza explosion in 1992 and the collapse of the Hotel New World in 1986).
‘Pulau’ of course means ‘island’, and Malay syntax dictates that it be placed before the descriptive: therefore Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong as opposed to Christmas Island or St. John’s Island.
It’s curious also why the island was named such: this could be a case where morphological considerations governed its christening: perhaps the island’s shape was in the form of a flattened nose (seen from which angle, and how to see a nose without the background of a face?).
