Pulborough - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pulborough is a village/small town in West Sussex, England, of some 5000 inhabitants, located almost centrally within the county, and overlooking the floodplain of the River Arun, some five miles to the north of the South Downs.
It is now home to the RSPB Nature Reserve Pulborough Brooks, where a wide variety of birdlife can be viewed from a number of professionally constructed hides and with an informative Visitors Centre.
Other than this brief and tragic episode, Pulborough remains a most scenic and peaceful place to live, with a variety of facilities including relatively large Sainsburys and Tesco stores, and a railway station on the Arun Valley Line from London Victoria to Arundel.

Both Pulborough’s and Stopham’s medieval bridges are now fortunately by-passed and left as footbridges.
The Arun, described as the second fastest-flowing river in the country, had strong tides; by the 1930s, they reached Pulborough, where two old stone bridges crossed the river.
The surviving old Swan bridge was built in 1738 to replace an earlier wooden one, and it has been preserved after a more modern bridge and carriageway were constructed alongside it.

Pulborough is one of those many stations that had a glorious past, but have now been reduced to a very simple status.
Once this happened the main line ran from Pulborough to Arundel with the line to Petworth (eventually, in 1866, to Midhurst) worked as a branch starting from Pulborough, which then developed sidings on both sides of the line and locomotive servicing facilities, including a turntable.
Pulborough station now has just an up line and a down line, but you can still see where the up sidings and the turntable were.

I asked the lady at the desk if it had been confirmed, and she said not, but that it had been seen virtually every day for the past week (and was still seen on Saturday) by lots of different people, so it looks as though it's likely that it is a Wood Duck.
