Stravinsky: ``Pulcinella'' Suite   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Pulcinella was an important turning point in Stravinsky's career, for it led him into the so-called ``neo-classical'' style which was to dominate his output for the next several decades.
Unlike his earlier ballets, which were characterized by huge orchestras, and innovative rhythms, Pulcinella is relatively simple and sparse, scored for 33 chamber players and 3 vocal soloists, and sticking mostly to time signatures that had been used two centuries earlier.
Enraged, their fiances plot to kill him, but he outwits them and substitutes a double, who feigns death and is then ``revived'' by a disguised Pulcinella.

Pulcinella - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Latin, this was a pullus gallinaceus, which led to the word "Pulliciniello" and "Pulcinella", related to the Italian pulcino or chick.
According to another version, "Pulcinella" derived from the name of Puccio d'Aniello, a peasant of Acerra, who was portrayed in a famous picture attribued to Annibale Carracci, and indeed characterized by a long nose.
According to Duchartre, his traditional temprement is to be mean, vicious, and crafty: his main mode of defense is to pretend to be too stupid to know what's going on, and his secondary mode is to physically beat people.

Pulcinella in Cambridge... and Aspasia? - Chowhound
I used to go to Trattoria Pulcinella in West Cambridge a fair amount, 7-8 years ago, and loved it.
But at the end of that time, I had a few bad meals there (a dish that was supposed to be in a gorgonzola sauce came instead with a melted slice of smoked gouda on it??).
Like the OP, I went to Pulcinella fairly often when they first opened (mid-90s) but stopped due to the increase in prices and decrease in food quality and service.

Straviinsky Pulcinella, The Fairy's Kiss Music of Boris Tchaikovsky
Pulcinella of 1920, written for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, was based on alleged pieces by Pergolesi (1710-36) that the impresario had found in Naples, whereas less than half of the 19 numbers turned out to be music by the short-lived native of Jesi who studied in Naples.
The orchestra is the Philharmonia, and while it validates its suavity, the players seem unmoved otherwise: in other words a “sessions” performance despite Craft’s urging and their successful collaboration in other works.
Whether or not you already have a Pulcinella, this third installment is a must for Stravinskians as well as Tchaikovskyites, thanks to the full Fairy’s Kiss.

STRAVINSKY: Firebird / Pulcinella (PAL) recommended cd collection, cd review and cd details.
His neo-classical period between the years of 1920 and 1939 is indicated among other things by the dance comedy Pulcinella, which was written in 1919/20, a commedia dell'arte adaptation for mime artists and singers which was first performed by the Ballets russes at the Paris Opera House in 1920.
The commissions of this inspired go-between of Russian art and western European modernism, including those for the subsequently formed Ballets russes, delineate the Great Master's period of brilliance from 1908/09 up until the death of Diaghilev in 1929.
Building on the Italian improvised comedy of the 17th and 18th centuries, choreographer Nils Christe, together with his set designer Tom Schenk and the costume designer Nelly van de Velden, created a vital and expressive dance version of Pulcinella for the Scapino Ballet Rotterdam which corresponded largely to the slapstick humor of the Italian example.

Pulcinella [according to G.B. Dona of Florence [died 1647]] was said to have been created after the peasants of Crifona in Salerno, for they were pale, fat, and inclined to speak in a nasal treble.
