The Pulicat Town is an interesting spot, with the First Dutch Cemetery with 22 protected tombs (1631 to 1655 AD) and another Landmark Dutch Cemetery with 76 tombs and mausoleums protected by the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India), a dilapidated Dutch Church and a Dutch Fort in shambles, dating back to 1609.
In 1606 A.D. when a Dutch ship ran aground on the Pulicat shores these Muslims offered food and help to the Dutch and struck a trade partnership with them, to procure and supply local merchandise for the Dutch to trade with the East Indies.
Although much of the lake is protected as a wildlife sanctuary, proposals for a petrochemical complex, power plant, and a satellite port on Ennore creek have raised concern about the continued ecological health of the lake.

On March 20, 1602, the representatives of the provinces of the Dutch republic, granted a the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC) a monopoly on the trade in the East Indies.
Pulicat was strategically located for the distribution of gunpowder, as its excellent shipping facilities enabled the Dutch to keep most of the VOC's major establishments in the East (such as Batavia, Malacca, and Ceylon) well stocked.

ENVIRONMENTALISTS have stressed the importance of conserving the Pulicat Lake spread across Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, the second largest brackish water lagoon in the country after Chilika in Orissa, for the sake of traditional fishermen dependent on it and the migratory birds, especially the exquisite flamingos which have made it their winter home.
Aruna, of the Centre for Environmental Education, suggested that the local fishermen be provided alternative avenues of employment by developing the tourism sector to ease the pressure on the lake and overexploitation of the fisheries resources.
Pulicat lake would be developed as a gateway of tourism in Andhra Pradesh.
