Pumpjet or not, the 688I has to be running at full power without lubrication oil, while being tied at the pier, to surpass the noise level of Seawolf at 20 kts
I have the impression that one of the major problems of pumpjet is the clogging up by sand and mud while operating in shallow water or near shores.
Pumpjets are also difficult to clean up and rust easily.

A runner - stator pumpjet would provide sufficient use of engine powershaft using 304 stainless steel for the shaft materialB, the hub diameter, which includes shaft bearings and a cover, was found to be 1.7ower was determined to be 30 lb-A specific speed of 800 was assumed for the engine.
The number of runner blades was set at ten, a reasonable number for a pumpjet of this size.
In Figure 11, an inboard drawing of the pumpjet in a possible application is shown with approximate dimensions.

The concept is to fight faster than the enemy, similar to the supercruising concept of the ATF whereby soviet fighters could not be able to fight at the speeds ATF could and be robbed of the initiative since they could not engage or disengage at the time of their choosing.
The disadvantage is weight from the shroud, cost of design which can be challenging and until recently with the British, erosion of the pumpjet shroud which is now composite on the new Astutes to reduce this and its associated maintenance cost.
On the ducted tail rotor on the Eurocopter product line, the blades aren't axisymmetrically arranged- there is an unequal amount of space between some of the blades- it's balanced, but I was told by one of the company pilots that this was done to reduce cavitation and thereby reduce noise.

This interaction calculation is combined with other components of a simple inviscid model of ducted propulsor performance: axisymmetric duct and hub boundary-element approximations coupled with a lifting-line representation of each blade row.
Parameters of the overall model are selected to bring about correlation with the circumferential-mean pressure distribution on the duct and component loads acting on the blades of the ERG Pumpjet, a strongly decelerating ducted propulsor.
A second impact of the developing axial flow-speed reduction near the passage walls is a local mismatch between the flow angle and rotor surface slope.

Ready to Hit Below the Water
To meet the requirement of reduced self noise of torpedoes and to make them more stealthy, a pumpjet propulsion system has been developed and integrated with the torpedo.
Contra-rotating propellers are unable to generate high speed due to cavitation at speed exceeding 45 knots.
The pumpjet propulsor has been tested to develop more power and low-noise performance.

Seawolf sub kits? - Scale Models   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
The two kits available are the Combat Subs (Pitroad) Seawolf and the new Yankee Modelworks Seawolf (NOTE: Yankee Modelworks now has all the former Blue Water Navy molds, now that BWN has folded).
The Virginia is longer (377 vs 352 ft) and narrower (33 vs. 42 ft) than the Seawolf, thus departing from the ideal hydrodynamic form.
It has a pumpjet and a considerable amount of automation.

The LEGUAN ferry is operated by a ferry commander and by one person per engine, meaning that an MLC 30 ferry has a crew of three persons, and an MLC 70 ferry a crew of five persons.
The ferry is manoeuvred by altering the speed of the engines and/or the thrust direction of the pumpjets.
The ferry is very easy to manoeuvre and is normally controlled simply by reducing the speed on one or two engines.

 Trafalgar (Britain)
The hallmark of the Trafalgar is the pumpjet propulsion system, available for our model.
Normally below water (even when the boat is surfaced) the pumpjet surrounds a multi-blade impeller with a truncated cone (or lampshade) shaped duct.
This provides smooth and quiet propulsion over a wide range of speeds.

The details of propeller technology are top secret, because propellers are what generate a lot of noise, so a quiet propeller equates to a quiet submarine.
