Chesapeake Bay Program - Pumpkinseed |
 | | The pumpkinseed sunfish, Lepomis gibbosus, a close relative of the bluegill, green, warmouth and redbreast sunfishes, occurs liberally in shallow, warm, freshwater ponds, lakes, streams, and rivers of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. |
 | | The pumpkinseed is a favorite species among young anglers because it eagerly bites onto nearly any small natural bait, and can also be taken using a variety of small artificial lures; flies are especially effective. |
 | | Besides its young human predators, pumpkinseed sunfish are eaten by hawks, waterfowl and raccoons. |
