Its colors are quite similar to Gray teal (Anas versicolor); however, they can't be confused in their environment because its distribution zones are very different.
In pair, and rarely in flocks, it's an omnivorous bird, seeking its food between the floating vegetation, muddy bottom, lake and lagoon borders or in cushion peat-bogs (bofedales) in the puna zone.

On the bare and dry hills on the island and on the shore I found some interesting highland birds: Puna Ibis, Puna Teal, Speckled Teal, Turkey Vulture, Mountain Caracara, American Kestrel, Andean Gull, Tawny-throated Dotterel, Andean Flicker, Bar-winged Cinclodes, White-winged Cinclodes, Rufous-naped Ground-tyrant, D'Orbigny Chat-tyrant, Rufous-collared Sparrow, Peruvian Sierra-finch, Black Siskin, Mourning Sierra-finch, Ash-breasted Sierra-finch.
Following birds were seen here: Chilean Flamingo, Puna Ibis, Crested Duck, Yellow-billed Pintail, Speckled Teal, Puna Teal, Peregrine's Falcon, Andean Avocet, White-backed Stilt, Puna Plover, Andean Lapwing, Golden-spotted Ground-dove, White-winged Negrito, Blue-and-white Swallow, Black-hooded Sierra-finch, Greenish Yellow-finch.
Besides that the surrounding landscape is quite spectacular and the dry puna vegetation is home to some interesting birds.

 Peru birding trip report part 3
Driving back to the high pass we saw some more activity than early in the morning: Plumbeous Sierra-Finch, Puna Hawk, Speckled Teal (a few in a small lake), Mountain Caracara again from very nearby on the shoulder of the road.
In the pass area, so in the open puna (photo above), with no trees around anywhere, we were surprised by a group of three Andean Flickers, one eating something from the ground, the other two hopping from stone to stone.
A Puna Hawk flew over high, and indeed if you look up the high slopes you see the tree line again.

I tink this is Hottentot teal, but the blue coloring on the edge of the winf does not show in my guide.

The minute size of Hottentot Teal also gives it away rather easily.

Native to Chile, it is fairly common high up in the Andes where it can be found on lakes, lagoons and rivers of the Puna zone.
