 PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE
Love is less than half the length of Magnolia, though it still has its share of long, ballsy tracking shots, a spot-on score (courtesy of Jon Brion) and familiar San Fernando Valley setting.
Part of Love deals with Barry's discovery of a marketing loophole that enables him to earn frequent flier miles by the thousands even though he's never once set foot on a plane (that particular thread is based on a true story).
While it's nowhere as demanding or profound as his previous films, Love might still be a bit challenging if you've been watching shit like Sweet Home Alabama for the last two months.

To explain the off-kilter power of Punch-Drunk Love is nearly impossible: So alien yet incredibly human is the movie, that it frequently puts the viewer into a state of Barry-phobia.
Films can overdose on capriciousness, however, and this is definitely a problem with Punch-Drunk Love.
Similarly, Jeremy Blake's color beams that stream through the picture with lovely and sometimes ominous feeling appear even more important.

 Filmtracks: Punch-Drunk Love (Jon Brion)
Punch-Drunk Love is in a musical limbo area, not demanding a score of any one particular type of Hollywood norm, and what Anderson ended up requesting was an approach similar to that of Magnolia, for which Aimee Mann had written cultishly popular song material.
But the truly bizarre nature of Punch-Drunk Love is put on display in three of the first four cues, when orchestral and electronic elements are mutilated badly and on purpose.
The aspects of Punch-Drunk Love that follow a (song) musical format make sense, and the four or five songs in the film and on album do set a very distinct, whimsical atmosphere for the film.

Similar to Jim Carrey’s doorway into drama with “The Majestic”, “Punch Drunk Love” is a diminutive semi-claustrophobic piece utilizing the magnetism and likeability of Sandler, but leaving his caricatures and goofiness out of the performance.

 Metaphilm - Punch-Drunk Love
Punch-Drunk Love took the prize for best director at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival and received critical raves for taking the genre of romantic comedy “to its absurdist limits.”[1] Romantic comedies, almost by definition, include a binary gender construction—male and female.
Throughout Punch-Drunk Love we seem to be given many views of the way women attempt to coerce men into various performances, but when it comes to empowerment, we find only one clear direction to go—cathartic love.
It ends with a man hopeful that his cathartic love can sustain the punch-drunk masculine journey on which he has embarked.

SPLICEDwire "Punch-Drunk Love" review (2002) Paul Thomas Anderson, Adam Sandler, Emily Watson
Dingbat love has never been as oddly appealing as in "Punch-Drunk Love," a surrealistically fluffy romance from the traditionally somber Paul Thomas Anderson ("Boogie Nights," "Magnolia").
Captivating, capricious and delectably eclectic, "Punch-Drunk Love" is every inch an Anderson movie that decyphers its characters' souls while leaving layers of subliminal import to work their way into your consciousness over the days and weeks afterwards in beguiling little ways.
Affably, obligingly abstract from the curiously inspired casting of Adam Sandler as a meek, sad, eccentric romantic hero to the peculiar plot about sex chat-line extortion and pudding-procured frequent flyer miles, it's a charming, strange little movie that strikes at the heart while the head is still trying to figure it out.

Punch-Drunk Love in its entirety is not pointless -- as a portrait of repression, it's downright poignant, and though I've always thought Adam Sandler was pretty pathetic, now I mean it in the good, moving way.
PDL is Barry's show, and he's simply too hauntingly sad for any other emotion to peek through.
His Barry Egan, a lonely mouse of a man, lives under the endless sniping of his numerous domineering sisters, and Sandler is ingratiating enough to make us see the problem not in his inability to get past their childish teasing, which obviously continues unabated since childhood, but in their childish teasing itself.

The DVD Journal Reviews : Punch-Drunk Love
Punch-Drunk Love is funny, and the character Sandler plays is not too far removed from his long line of bombastic, goofballing miscreants.
Not only does the 35 minutes of special features material feel too scant to warrant a separate platter (especially alongside a 95-minute feature), with the exception of "Mattress Man" and the first of the two deleted scenes, neither does any of it add any value to Punch-Drunk Love, instead simply reorganizing the movie's elements.
Anderson seems obsessed with the perils of the emotional journey through a dangerous world of random accidents and unearned violence; a world where stepping up to the curb of a hectic thoroughfare is no less precarious than taking the first step toward a new romance.

 Review: Punch Drunk Love
Punch Drunk Love is quirky and stylish, but not in a manner that comes across as overly artsy or pretentious.
In the end, Punch Drunk Love's real strength is its willingness to take off on some unexpected tangents: the phone sex extortion, the massive accrual of frequent flier miles, and Barry's bizarre obsession with a certain musical instrument.
But Punch Drunk Love is unapologetically offbeat, and, while the chemistry between Sandler and Watson never really sizzles, there's enough between them to keep the viewer interested.
