Topic: Punch Miller

  Michael Miller
There are faces in Miller’s art and there are faces in Jung’s work, who reveals the beauty of the underbelly of faces in Korea; the faces of the “women of comfort” who comforted Japanese during WW II, but these are their faces today, some 60 years later.
As Miller described it: "The story of one is the story of all." He often revisits an idea, changing it to increase its meaning.
The main focus of Miller's work is in the corporate culture with all its attendant foibles, its predatory savagery and its capacity for craziness rendered in the grand tradition of such graphic satirists as Honore Daumier, Georg Grosz, Posada, and even the “bad boy” of the 1960s, R. Crumb.

See You In Court - Punch, 19 Feb 1988
By the morning of the second day, with the barn owl still on his feet, he had persuaded at least one person in the courtroom that Russell Miller was an unscrupulous rotter who had run roughshod over poor old L. Ron Hubbard, not to mention the Church of Scientology's legal rights - myself.
Miller, I not only had the most to lose (no book, no royalties, three years' work wasted) but I was also the only person in the entire courtroom who was not being paid.

But as far as Miller's friends were concerned, Eric was as good as dead three months before that morning -- the instant he ran afoul of New Haven's William "The Wild Guy" Grasso, the ruthless, sterling-tressed underboss of New England's Patriarca crime family, somewhere toward the middle of September 1988.
Miller, a 30-year-old real estate dilettante and one-time boxing champion, was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Eric Miller's own account of the Grasso incident, one his father related to the Advocate during a visit to Miller's Emanuel Cemetery gravesite in Wethersfield this past winter, is that Eric was strolling down the sidewalk along Franklin Avenue in Hartford's Italian South End on his way home, when he spotted a friend.

JS Online: Miller drops court battle over ads
Miller said Monday that it dropped its request for a judge to order St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch to stop running newspaper ads that have dubbed Miller Lite the "Queen of Carbs." Those ads haven't slowed Miller's sales, the Milwaukee-based brewer said Monday.
Miller in May asked U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman to order Anheuser-Busch to stop running the "Queen of Carbs" ads, which Miller said falsely portrayed Miller Lite as a women's beer.
Miller Lite's volume sales in supermarkets increased 13.2% during the six-month period that ended May 8, compared with the prior six months, Miller said, citing figures gathered by consumer research firm A.C. Nielsen.

As for the others, trumpeter Punch Miller demonstrates that, while he may be past his prime, he still has plenty of spunk and a stream of ideas left to bring to the table.
Despite the fact that Punch was in the twilight of his career (he was to die on December 2, 1971), there was still enough energetic drive left to lift his playing far above the ordinary.
Punch Miller is his usual ebullient, athletic self despite being very close to the end of his life, and when he is good he is very good; but his playing quite often comes a bit unstuck while Homer Eugene's raw, wry style suffers from the overall lack of resonance-as does the whole ensemble effect.
