Punggol LRT Line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although presently Punggol is actually less densely populated than other towns, there are plans to turn it into a new town, and hence probably house hundreds of thousands of people, an especially large portion of the population of Singapore, especially when development is completed.
The Punggol LRT Line gives an incentive for development and residence in the area by providing a more rapid and effortless form of transport compared to other forms of transport in Singapore, and is part of the plan to link up Punggol with the integrated public transport system.
Punggol LRT Station, the centrepiece of the line, is adjacent to Punggol MRT Station, thus linking up the Punggol MRT Line to the Mass Rapid Transit system that spans the entire island of Singapore.

When the backup for the LRT is buses, and when the backup for buses is… other buses, I think we begin to see one of the little truths in this whole sorry saga.
Another one we might consider is how accessible the LRT system is for residents, regardless of whether the system is running at 99.7% efficiency (at most 4 minutes’ downtime for every 20 hours’ operation).
The most explicit case of how this LRT system has made residents unhappy, I found, was not in Bukit Panjang but in Choa Chu Kang, where the SMRT cancelled the feeder bus service 307 plying Yew Tee and Teck Whye claiming it was duplicated by the LRT.

Punggol East, Sengkang West LRTs start operation on Jan 29 - 2Bangkok.com Forum
The Mitsubishi Crystal trains are quite nice, smooth rubber-wheeled automated guideway transit much in the style of Tokyo's Yurikamome line, and the little cars were packed today with sightseers doing the loop (if you're already on the MRT, it costs nothing to board the LRT, do the circuit, and come back!).
however, when you approach from either end of the punggol station, you'll see that the station can accomodate the future track which i believe will be used for the northern spur line in future.
A little digging revealed that both Yurikamome and the Sengkang LRT were built by Mitsubishi (I thought the track looked awfully familiar!), here's some Mitsu propaganda in PDF form.
