Punk Magazine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Punk Magazine was a fanzine created by cartoonist John Holmstrom, Ged Dunn was the first publisher, provided the initial money, direction and organizational guidence and "resident punk" Legs McNeil.
Punk Magazine was a vehicle for discussing and examining the underground music scene of early 1970s New York (exemplified by bands like Wayne County) which spawned from clubs like Max's Kansas City.
It named the punk "movement" and also helped to shape a new way of making musical news, mixing Mad Magazine-style cartooning with the more straightforward pop journalism of the kind found in Creem.

Legs McNeil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nicknamed the "resident punk" in the magazine, he claims (to much dispute} that he was the first person(along with Co-founder John Holmstrom) to have coined the term "punk" to describe a certain type of music, fashion, and attitude.
He says he came up with the name punk because Telly Savalas used the line on the show "Kojak" "you lousy punk!" Although, the term was quite open to question at the time (to his and "PUNK"'s dismay) and was not set in stone.
After all, even Blondie was considered "punk" by some of the mainstream media after they stole the term from Punk Magazine.

 BAD MAGS
Punk magazine was published sporadically until 1979 when it went belly up with issue #17.
Punk started out in the streets, but it ended up mutilated between the glossy pages of slick fashion magazines.” Which is interesting as some of the mags mentioned below have their own “punk fashion” pages.
Punks in porn is sort of ironic because a lot of punks, for the most part, claimed boredom with sex or asexuality, in spite of their usage of bondage gear, which was introduced through the English punk scene thanks to Malcolm McLarens shop, “Sex”.

And for Fat Mike, leader of punk rock institutions NOFX and founder of Fat Wreck Chords, the day that the president was re-elected was no doubt a mix of both (though Mike would likely lean toward the more painful and frustrating side of the spectrum than the relief side).
Punk has always struggled with its politics trying to navigate between facilitating real, tangible change without participating in a larger, often more corporate system.
All I know is that for the first time the punk scene actually united and accomplished something on a national level.

Rhythm of Cruelty: Howard Devoto, Magazine, and the Post-Punk Revival - Article - Stylus Magazine
Punk was still “hot,” and the weekly press was equally hot to begin acknowledging the sometimes odd, occasionally incomprehensible, but undeniably vital new talent that was bubbling up in places other than the capital.
Magazine had already been signed to Virgin Records, a benefit of Devotos growing underground reputation, the medias as yet unburnt fascination with all things punk, and their early live shows.
The bleak earnestness is also oddly what connects Magazine to the camp of Visage (and even Fischerspooner); they were not afraid to look like morons, fall flat on their faces in public, act the fool, prance like jibbering bald insects.
