Films like Fight Club, Requiem for a Dream, and julien donkey-boy are up to a kind of narrative and visual experimentation that there hasn't been a lot of in American film since the 1960s.
Films like Blair Witch Project, Being John Malkovich, Run Lola Run, Magnolia, Memento, and the Dogma 95 films (notably The Celebration and Dancer in the Dark) reject postmodern cynicism in favor of a new sincerity that's not defensive because it doesn't need to be.
And Kubrick's film came under especially heavy fire for its supposedly naive sentimentality because he was one of the postmodernist boys, whose The Killing had been an early example of the cut-up method in film and whose Clockwork Orange was the gold standard for detached, cynical irony.

The movie is about a young punk, Stevo, an "anarchist" (in the sense of advocating chaos) in the mid 1980s.
The film outlines the daily lives of the seemingly only two punks in Salt Lake City, Stevo, who narrates the film, and Heroin Bob, his best friend who ironically believes that any scheduled drug is inherently dangerous.
The film is shot in documentary style with frequent soliloquies by Stevo.

Up until the mainstream consumption of the punk rock aesthetic, there was a little something called the DIY ethic which most punks held as something very important, an integral part of what it was to be a punk rocker.
All punk films have to have scenes of carnage and destruction from various news reports, preferably filmed directly off the TV screen for that cool fuzzed out distorted look, and of course, we get that here, intercut with scenes of some kids skateboarding over to their friend's house.

Punk Attitude - Don Letts 2005
Punk is thought provokingly traced right back to the American music of the 1950’s and documented through its explosion onto the music scene in the 1970’s (against a background of social unrest and discontented youth).
The use of 'punk attitude' entails a mixture of tangibles and intangibles that enables you to place artists subjectively in either having it or not having it since the dawn of time.

At best, teen films were keen on portraying the wacky friend of the protagonist as an eccentric type, with weird haircuts and punk/new wave posters on their bedroom walls.
This film focused on the first Sex Pistols US tour in 1978 and also featured performances by the Dead Boys, X-Ray Spex, Sham 69, Generation X and the Rich Kids as well as a famous interview with Sex Pistols “bassist” and punk legend Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, conducted in their bed.

With bells tolling, the film opens with a zoom-in to a stone memorial "in tribute to the police officers of San Francisco who gave their lives in the line of duty" (presented by a citizen's committee) [located at the Hall of Justice, 850 Bryant Street, between 7th and 8th Streets].

It began in the latter part of 1977, fusing the styles of early punk bands such as the Clash and the Ramones with early British rock like the Rolling Stones and The Who, and was seen as promoting unity between punks and skinheads.
The band's early material is usually considered classic Oi!, but by the mid-1980s Skrewdriver was leading a small neo-Nazi rock scene, although apart from lead singer Ian Stuart Donaldson, the band had a different line up from that of the late 1970s.
Their music was recognizably Oi!, but they sought to distance themselves from punk in general, preferring the term "R.A.C." ("Rock Against Communism" — a reaction to Rock Against Racism).

“New Punk Cinema” edited by Nicholas Rombes
Addressing a wide range of films and issues affecting contemporary film culture, the essays consider the possibilities for conceptualising a cinematic avant-garde in a climate where its historical markers have been largely absorbed by commercial institutions.
What distinguishes the films New Punk Cinema suggests are establishing a second punk wave is their reception: for the most part, these films have broken away from the underground culture of the historical avant-gardes and achieved significant popular success.
In the case of the American examples discussed, the punk vision encompasses the idiosyncratic tendency toward an apparent nihilism which is evident in more and more contemporary works emerging from the US, a trend which has been discussed elsewhere by film theorist Jeffrey Sconce in the context of the new American “smart” film (1).

The band was formulated from the greatly diverse West Midlands region of England in the late 1970s, with bands such as The Beat and The Selecter in support of the scene.
Supplementing the lilting Jamaican rhythms of ska with punk rock's uncompromising lyrics and brutal guitar chords resulted in a hybrid that slaked a thirst for a moshing groove, plenty of melody via the horns, and thoughtful, irreverent, or politically charged lyrics.
Such a vast difference in sounds has created much debate between the ska and punk communities as to the validity of the ska punk genre.
