Punk rock   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Punk rock (from 'punk', meaning rotten, worthless) was originally used to describe the primitive guitar based rock and roll of '60s bands such as The Seeds[?], and later Detroit bands The Stooges and MC5.
The roots of punk rock lie in the earlier form of "punk", as well as the UK pub rock scene, glam rock groups such as The New York Dolls and the early driving forces of the avant garde new wave music, such as Patti Smith.
Also of importance was a desire to return to the simplicity of early rock and roll and a rejection of what punk rockers saw as the pretension, commercialism and pomposity which had overtaken "arena rock" in the 1970s, spawning the grandiose forms of heavy metal and progressive rock.

Punk rock was also a reaction against tendencies that had overtaken popular music in the 1970s, including what the punks saw as superficial "disco" music and bombastic forms of heavy metal, progressive rock and "arena rock." Punk also rejected the remnants of the hippie counterculture of the 1960s.
Punk rock in Britain coincided with the end of the era of post-war consensus politics that preceded the rise of Thatcherism, and nearly all British punk bands expressed an attitude of angry social alienation.

Author thoroughly examines the Jewish roots of punk rock - The Boston Globe
It's not just that punk pioneers such as Lou Reed, Blondie's Chris Stein, and half of the legendary Ramones, Joey and Tommy, were Jewish, or that the celebrated (and recently shuttered) Bowery dive CBGB, punk's original home, was owned by Hilly Kristal, a fellow Jew.
Punk, Beeber exhaustively argues, was infused with a singular Jewish sensibility forged by hardship, perseverance, and a potent cocktail of optimism and cynicism that gave the music -- and the larger cultural movement -- its twitchy swagger.
He even goes so far as to declare "No Holocaust, no punk." Yes, the roiling anger and dark humor of punk was a reaction to lingering feelings of victimization.

The Mekons: Punk Rock - PopMatters Music Review
A quarter century ago, the Mekons weren't punk in the mohawks and safety pins sense, nor in the gobbing and pogoing sense.
In fact, the main connection between early Mekons singles like "Where Were You?" and punk rock was punk's surgical removal of technical skill from the rock 'n' roll contract.
As is referenced in one of Punk Rock's finest moments, the Asian-banjo and shruti-box drone of "This Sporting Life", the Mekons' art-school politics rove unrecognizably far from the modern idea of "political punk" and have more in common with the "kitchen sink" films of Lindsay Anderson and Ken Loach.

Punk Rock is a fine album; if some of the material sounds dated, that's good because it showcases a music that was rather than something played for corporate dollars by kids who weren't born when the band were first kicking up a ruckus down Leeds way.
Punk rock is now the very simulacra it railed against, and this album by the Mekons investigates and confirms that in spades.

"Punk Rock" mixes re-recordings of the band's late 70s energetic punk rock anthems with live material recorded during their 25th anniversary tour in 2002.
So it's hard not to get mired in expectations when you learn that the Mekons recorded Punk Rock after their 25th anniversary tour, and that it captures fifteen songs that they wrote at the band's birth (1977-81), but recorded-- some for the first time-- in the last couple years.
But even as Punk Rock shows that The Mekons have far better musicians today than when they were first fumbling around with Gang of Four's instruments, it also proves they're better songwriters.

The Demics were a punk band which formed in London, Ontario in 1977 and, as with most punk bands, sank into oblivion by the early '80s.
However, the songs the Demics played were true to the style of '77 punk – loud, snotty and reckless.
The most inventive track of the album is not a Demics song at all, but a techno/punk tribute to the glory of the punk era and its rejection of traditional values.
