Punk is inherently a contradiction because people define it as 'not caring about what other people think', but at the same time the punk scene is more rigidly socially defined than most other scenes.
Punk isnt just caring about yourself though, because it is full of politics, liberalism, etc - at least within the punk scene, ideally, there is a community created of people who dont want to live the mainstream but can support each other and live their lives how they want, and help others do the same.
Punk is not dressing as if you forgot is wasn't London, the year was 1978, and you were a lower middle class hooligan, whose mother worked in a meat-packing plant, and whose father was an alcoholic.

Youth Culture and New technologies - Subculture - Punk - M/Cyclopedia of New Media
The origination of punk music and culture in Britain in the 1970’s was seen by many as a cultural revolution that was to take over from the demise of Rock ’n’ Roll and experimentations of progressive rock that were prominent in the late sixties.
Punk was seen as a renewed return to the rebellious roots, established by Rock ’n’ Roll and also as a sign that particularly, the youth of society, were fighting against the status quo and by challenging the basic look of society they were inherently challenging its morals and values (Winant, 2005).
Punk subculture is reliant on fashion and style as the predominant means of transmission of values but the role of the media, particularly in this present technologically advanced and information dependant society is of increasing relevance.

Skate punk has shown to be the most diverse of the various genres of punk, as it started as a blending of two different styles of music and has continued on and on to add more and more.
Punk, since it started in the later sixties, has been building a diverse, meaningful counter culture, a revolutionary new place in society for those who feel left out and turned down by “the system.” Modern pop/bubblegum punk has failed to achieve that.
To people who live the culture of punk rock, to those for which it is more than just a style of music and clothing but also a way of life, this bastardization is on level with blasphemy.

In a way, punk rock became similar to dance culture and club culture where the music is also seen as having a canon, but capable of (and in need of) constant evolution and adaptation, although it is doubtful that dance culture has become as relentlessly doctrinaire as modern punk culture.
Punk bands that have achieved a modicum of mainstream success such as Green Day were seen as derivative of the original canon and also as "selling out" by a community that tries to avoid major record labels and access to widespread audiences as a conscious decision.

But as two recent books and an increasing number of punk veterans attest, this is precisely the space that can prepare an individual to discover the same enlightenment that the Buddha did more than 2,500 years ago while sitting beneath a tree.
Punk bands who play on the floor (in small clubs that lack stages) are making a demand similar to Zen masters who speak of "killing the Buddha," inviting the audience and the chaos of the pit to efface the performers, who are, after all, the de facto leaders of punk culture.
Chris Raiche, bassist for the underground punk band Eulcid (that's the Greek geometry guru, purposely misspelled) and a Zen practitioner who lived at the Cambridge Zen Center before moving to North Carolina this past June, supports this idea of self-effacement in punk.
