A fanzine (see also: zine) is a nonprofessional publication produced by fans of a particular subject for the pleasure of others who share their interest.
The Punk explosion in the United Kingdom led to a massive upsurge of interest in fanzines as an alternative to the mainstream media that was felt to be too exploitative, capitalist, and essentially uninterested in the Punk Movement and the concerns of disaffected youth.
In recent years the traditional paper zine has begun to give way to the webzine (or "e-zine") that is easier to produce and uses the potential of the Internet to reach an ever larger, possibly global, audience.

Most zines are extremely ephemeral, many not surviving past the first few issues or changing titles with relative frequency, and are therefore difficult to study.
Zines have made great strides in gaining legitimacy and cultural importance as they have moved away from addressing subjects dealing strictly with popular culture and have started to cover more relevant subjects that affect more people.
As a movement, punk adopted the same revolutionary ideals held by the early avant-garde movements: unusual fashions, the view of everyday life as an abstraction of art, the juxtaposition of unrelated objects and behaviors, adversarial involvement of the audience in performances, a general lack of artistic training and the rejection of accepted modes of performance.

Punk zines took their names from science fiction fanzines, small fan-oriented pubs that had been around for quite some time.
Their shoestring publishing and distribution methods epitomized punk's anticorporate and DIY ideals, but their topics – everything from unusual deaths caused by molasses floods to the joy of having a "self-amusing personality" – were the stuff of a new literary form.
These zines were mesmerizingly strange and decidedly personal, a heady antidote to the kinds of sterile postmodern writing that dominated the literary art scene of the early '80s.

Punk zines were the indigenous and insurrectionary voice of a whole generation of English working class youth alienated and marginalized within England's class ridden culture.
This proliferation of punk zines did not guarantee a consistent quality, however these were seen as minor impediments to the would-be publisher empowered by the efforts of others working out an accessible and affordable aesthetic.
In relation to zines in the '80s, punk zines played a pivotal role in establishing an aesthetic territory which was to be the inspiration and starting point for many underground zines during this decade.

The earliest UK punk zine was probably Sniffin' Glue, produced by punk fan and founder of the band Alternative TV, Mark Perry in 1976.

Zines that were around at the time of me getting into the scene were Maximum Rock N Roll, especially the reviews and the scene reports from all over, back then it was the ultimate international zine, it’s a shame it’s so tame these days.
Zines aren’t so bad cause they don’t cost that much to produce, especially if you do a small print run and get them copied at work or by a friend or something.
I think the DIY ethic is paramount to punk, otherwise we are not an alternative to the greedy capitalist bastards that we’re supposed to be against….

Tim Yohannan, founder of punk rock 'zine Maximumrocknroll (MRR) and one of the forces behind the famed 924 Gilman St. punk-rock club in Berkeley, Calif., died Friday due to complications from lymphatic cancer.
Yohannan to his mission to spread the gospel of punk that he turned the offices of the magazine into a communal living space inhabited by staffers and frequently visited by punk bands in town for gigs.
Yohannan was often contentious, he considered that a reflection of the strength of the punk elder's convictions.

Artcore is a beutifually cosnturcted zine from the UK that comes out once or twice per year and has been coming out since themid 80's.
Editor Welly puts in an a extra effort to make this 'zine look as good as the writing is, and he tries to feature a mix of hardcore punk from the past and present.
This a beautifully constructed photo book documenting "Japanese underground hardcore punk scene 1989-2003." It's 80+ pages (many in full color) are crammed with photographs, flyers and commentary (In Japanese and English) on bands such as Gloom, Disclose, Defiance, Anti-Authorize, SDS, and jsut about every good Japanese hardcore punk band active in the past 12 years.
