Punt (football) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A punt is a play in Canadian football and American football in which the football is kicked downfield to the opposing team.
In American Football, if an offensive team has the ball too far away from the end zone to attempt a field goal, and is facing a fourth down (or a third down in Canadian football), and too far away from the first down marker, they may choose to punt the ball.
The current record for the longest punt in the NFL is 98 yards by Steve O'Neal on September 21, 1969.

 College Football Encyclopedia - Introduction
When the first true football scoring system was devised in 1883 (replacing customary scoring procedures in which one point usually was awarded for advancing the ball across the goal in any fashion), kicking was emphasized.
College football's rich heritage and lore are sometimes lost in these days of emphasizing the present and hyping superstars as "the greatest ever" at running, passing, kicking, or whatever.
Before 1937, such categories as punt or kickoff return yardage and pass reception yardage were often totaled together with rushing yardage to give a player's "offense" for a game; NCAA figures themselves are not totally complete or reliable for the early years.

 Punt (football)
In Canadian football, possession does not change until the receiving team establishes possession; in that game, a player can advance the ball by kicking it forward and recovering it.
If the receiving team does not return the ball, the play ends, and the receiving team takes possession of the ball at the spot where the ball stopped moving or went out of bounds.
In American football, a ball that goes out of bounds beyond the end zone is considered a touchback, and the receiving team starts its possession at its own 20 yard line.
