This charming 5000 year old city is an architectural gem, with fascinating examples of architecture from Romans, Moors, Christians and even Neolithic Man. An easy hour’s drive north of Malaga, Antequera can easily be combined with a visit to El Torcal.
Some of the oldest dolmens - prehistoric tombs - in Europe have been found here, and there are three around the city’s northern outskirts open to the public, the most impressive of which is Cueva de Menga (open Tuesday-Friday 10am-2pm, 3pm-5:30pm; Saturday-Sunday 10am-2pm).
How the massive rocks were cut and dragged into place to form crude caves remains a mystery, similar to that of Stonehenge int eh UK.
