Puppy is considered useful for working on old computers, as an emergency rescue system, as a Linux demonstration system, or as a complete general purpose operating system.
Puppy is fairly full featured for a system that runs entirely in a ramdisk; applications were chosen that met various constraints; size in particular.
If, on booting from the CD Puppy Linux finds this in the root directory of the hard drive then it will use this as though it were a USB keydrive; since it never changes the file's size or any metadata, this is reasonably safe.

Please remember that puppy runs under Linux and therefore all input is case sensitive, so FileName.rec is not the same as filename.rec as far as puppy is concerned.
The backslash is used by Linux shells as a special escape character to modify the meaning of the character that follows it.
This is not really a puppy command, but it makes it easier to upload and download data from the directory where it resides, rather than having to supply long pathnames.

Puppy is our favourite baby Linux and in a round-about way has the most automated and easiest install procedure.
We have included the Chubby Puppy version on the APC disc, a third party modification of the original Puppy 1.05 distro which comes with a slimmed down version of OpenOffice application suite but still runs on a 128MBs memory key.
Remember, at this point, Puppy Linx has no idea you want to eventually make it boot from a USB drive, so it assumes that - as you are booting from the Live CD - you want a place to store settings and data once you quit the OS.

Puppy saves data in a Linux partition when there is no ready FAT partition found, so this exceptional case does happen.
If you are using Puppy version 1.04, reboot and press 3 at boot time to restrain Puppy from using any partition for storing data.
With earlier versions of Puppy, the install script advises you to change the partition type (using cfdisk), but perhaps downloading version 1.04 is much easier than doing that.

what they dont tell you when you download this linux version is that you need to have about 5 files pre downloaded into your HDD before pop in the Puppy linux.
The most typical method for Windows users to experience Linux is to run this as a "Live" CD in which no files are written to your Windows XP (NTFS) partition.
Puppy will absolutley not write to your Windows HD and mess anything up unless you want it too.

My "first take" with installing Puppy was on a tiny USB Compact Flash (CF) card, as I really like the idea of having all my personal data and the operating system in something that I can carry in a shirt pocket or wallet.
Go to the Puppy download page and download live-Puppy (file puppy-xxxx.iso, where "xxxx" is version number plus some options), that boots off a CD.
If you have a relatively modern Linux distribution, it should have automatically recognised your USB CF card, and if the flash card is the only USB device then it doesn't matter what socket you plug it into, it will show up as /dev/sda1.

Erik's software is very clever - it can boot Puppy Linux using Syslinux so that it runs directly on the PC or, alternatively, it can run Puppy Linux in an emulated environment on top of Windows or Linux.
In my case the actual device used by the flash drive was /dev/sda1 and I mounted it on /media/usb but it may be different for you, so remember to substitute your mountpoint for /media/usb and your device location for /dev/sda1.
To run Puppy on top of another Linux session, mount the flash drive, open an xterm and navigate to the root of the drive before typing..

The one I found most useful was called Hal 91, though this is a boot floppy, not harddrive installable and too tiny for me. Grey Cat Linux seemed the best contender for a real floppy based distribution - but like a lot of the small Linux's presumes you already have window$ installed.
