In the past, the industry responded to the whole downloading issue, concerns about music prices and the resulting shift in how buyers think about getting their music with ham-fisted education campaigns, so it was unclear whether the site would offer anything worthwhile.
For selection, Puretracks is heavy on major-label music (no surprise there, considering who holds the cards), but there are also some obscure choices.
Apple is being very cagey about the launch of a Canadian version, but the assumption is that Puretracks' deals with the major labels will ultimately clear the way for the local arrival of iTunes as well as the new Napster.

Aside from the fact that is uses crappy DRM (which is why I’ve avoided it until now), the reason I’m complaining today is that as a new user, I can’t believe how much frustration I’m experiencing.
Since I don’t have a PureTracks account, I asked a friend to download them for me. He discovered that there’s an option to send them to a friend rather than download them himself, and since we were nervous about their DRM scheme, we decided that would be the easiest way to go.
PureTracks, I was avoiding you before, but now I want nothing to do with you ever.

Puretracks offers a superior experience to the fl-market file-sharing services that I've used (Kazaa and LimeWire), with one big exception-the selection at Puretracks is, as yet, inferior.
Puretracks has one unique feature that's a standout, in my opinion: a "radio" or streaming media experience that allows the user to listen to different channels (like rap or classical).
Some people have had problems with their computers as a result of using these fl-market apps: My nephew, an avid bootleg downloader, has seen his new HP machine kidnapped by Kazaa advertisers who intrude on every application he's using regardless of whether he's on-line or not.

But here in Canada, Apple's music store has not yet been switched on (although my friend and former colleague Robert Thompson of the National Post reported last week that Apple was ready to light it up any day now).
In Canada, the the 99-cents-a-song business has belonged largely to PureTracks, the store set up and operated by Moontaxi Media of Toronto.
They're a nice bunch of folks and they've sold over a million songs in their first year, which is nothing to sneeze at when it's just us 30 million Canadians you're selling to.
