  Communist Party
The American Communist Party was born in Chicago in 1919 and headquartered there until 1927, when its headquarters and newspaper, the Daily Worker, moved to New York.
In the 1930s, the Communist Party in Chicago reached its largest audience through organizing the unemployed and protesting evictions and cuts in relief.
A small Chicago Communist Party remained at the close of the twentieth century.

 Stalin - MSN Encarta
As a political commissar in the Red Army during the height of the civil war, Stalin supervised military activities against the counterrevolutionary White forces along the western front that were led by General Pyotr Wrangel.
Stalin set in motion a massive purge of the party following the assassination of Leningrad party chief Sergey Kirov in December 1934, which many have speculated was masterminded by Stalin because he viewed Kirov as a threat.
Although the purge began gradually, with selective arrests in 1934 and 1935, by 1936 the Soviet secret police were arresting and executing party members by the thousands.

 Wikinfo | Great Purge
The purge targeted all categories of the society: members of the Communist Party, the government, the armed forces and the intelligentsia, as well as "anti-Soviet elements" among peasants (kulaks), in industry, and in transport.
The height of the purge occurred while the Soviet secret police (the NKVD) was headed by Nikolai Yezhov, from September 1936 to August 1938; this period is often referred to as the Yezhovschina ("Yezhov storm").
The term purge in Soviet political slang was an abbreviation of the expression "purge of the Party ranks", the Party being, of course, the Communist Party.

90 years of the Communist Manifesto
"Communists openly declare that their ends can be attained only by the forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions." Reformism sought to explain this postulate of the Manifesto on the grounds of the immaturity of the movement at that time and the inadequate development of democracy.
A complete purge of feudal rubbish from society is conceivable only on the condition that the proletariat, freed from the influence of bourgeois parties, can take its stand at the head of the peasantry and establish its revolutionary dictatorship.
The Manifesto must therefore be amplified with the most important documents of the first four congresses of the Communist International, the essential literature of Bolshevism, and the decisions of the conferences of the Fourth International.

Purge of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first major purge of the Communist Party ranks (or simply purge, Russian: "чистка" – "cleansing") was performed by Bolsheviks as early as 1921.
Although this term is mostly associated with Stalinism, the first purge of the Stalin era was performed only in 1929–1930 according to the resolution of the XVI Party Conference.
The next systematic Party purge in the Soviet Union was declared in December 1932 to be performed during 1933.

 Gendercide Watch: Stalin's Purges
The most prominent elements of Stalin's Purges, for most researchers, were the intensive campaigns waged within key Soviet institutions and sectors like the Communist Party, the Army, the NKVD (secret police), and scientists and engineers.
From 35-39, women outnumbered men by 61 to 39 percent; from 40-54, the figure was 62 to 38 percent; in the 55-59 age group, 67 to 33 percent; from 60-69, 65 to 35 percent; and 70 or older, 68 to 32 percent.
The impetus of the Purge waned at the end of 1938, by which time "the snowball system [of accusations] had reached a stage where half the urban population were down on the NKVD lists," and the proportion of the entire Soviet population arrested had reached one in every twenty.

 Anticommunism
Because of the Communist party's connection to the Soviet Union, it was now seen as a threat to national security.
It tried to deport foreign-born Communists and, in 1948, indicted and convicted the party's top leaders under the Smith Act, a 1940 law prohibiting the "teaching and advocating" of subversive doctrines.
Because Communists had been part of a larger political movement that encompassed an entire constellation of left-wing causes and organizations, investigators assumed that all participants in the larger movement belonged to the party as well.

People who are interested in the actual history and not caricatures have interviewed ex-rebels, read their extensive self generated press and posters (which ceased after the army regained control in 1968-69) and published several articles and a few books about them.
The disillusioned ex-rebels became the radical "red capitalist class" dissidents, later the "socialist legality" dissidents of 1974, the anti-Gang of 4 protesters of 1976, the democracy wall activists of 1978-81, and leaders of the worker protests in 1989, which *really* scared the regime, unlike the students.

The "Great Purges" Reconsidered by J. Arch Getty
The "purges" (in Russian, chistki or "cleansings") were periodic attempts by the central CPSU leadership, the Central Committee and the Politburo, to find out who was in the Party, and to strengthen it organizationally.
The "purges" culminated in the Party elections of 1936 and 1937, which resulted in a great turnover of lower and middle-level Party leadership by democratic vote of the Party membership.
The Communist Party, in its attempt to industrialize the USSR, to prevent (as they thought) the defeat of the socialist state at the hands of the capitalist powers, largely identified this industrialization with socialism.
