Purley, and its neighbouring town Coulsdon used to be Coulsdon and Purley Urban District Council, within the County of Surrey.
Purley Cross Roundabout connects routes leading east to East Grinstead and Eastbourne, west to Epsom and Kingston, south to Redhill[?] and Brighton, and north to Croydon and London.
Purley Way[?] which connects Purleys road system to Croydon's trading and industrial hinterland was also the main approach to the former Croydon Airport, the predecessor of the present London Heathrow Airport and London Gatwick Airport, and it joins Purley Cross as one of the busiest highways from Croydon to London.

Purley Hall is the manor house of La Hyde, one of three manors in Purley.
His poor wife was apparently taken ill with small pox, at Reading, while travelling from London to Wiltshire and was removed to her uncle's manor house of Purley Magna, next to the church.
Purley Hall appears to have undergone substantial alterations in 1719 when a third storey is said to have been removed because the weight was too much for the walls to bear.

Purley Parish Council had been pressed for some years to commemorate him with a street name, especially after one was named for his contemporary, Cecil Aldin.
He also built a foreman’s Cottage, (now occupied by Mr Wallis and his sister Mrs D Brown) and the 8 ‘Menpes Cottages’ to accommodate employees who were in charge of the 40 large greenhouses.
He was a familiar sight in Purley, visiting the nurseries in Long Lane each morning.

A seven-year-old girl died in the small block of four apartments in Maldon Road, Wallington - her four-year-old brother died later in hospital.
Jim Bascran, assistant divisional officer with the London Fire Brigade, said: "Unfortunately one child was discovered dead in the maisonette and a second child, rescued by breathing apparatus crews and taken to St Helier hospital, was pronounced dead at the hospital."
Crews from Wallington, Purley, Croydon, Norbury and Mitcham stations attended the fire after being alerted at about 0315 BST on Sunday.
