In 1915 Purley and the neighbouring town of Coulsdon formed the Coulsdon and Purley Urban District which in 1965 was abolished and its area used to form part of the London Borough of Croydon.
Purley Cross roundabout connects routes leading east to East Grinstead and Eastbourne (the A22), west to Epsom and Kingston, south to Redhill and Brighton (the A23), and north to Croydon and London.
Purley was named in 2003 as the wealthiest area of suburban London, mainly due to the presence of the famous Webb Estate in West Purley.

Sodium lighting was extended along the whole length of Purley Way, with lights suspended centrally over the road, in 1936: their installation became the subject of a radio broadcast.
At the northern end of Purley Way, the Standard Steel Co was joined by several other industrial concerns, including the Croydon Foundry Ltd, and Metal Propellers Ltd: some of these works had private sidings running from the railway line to their rear.
In addition, the two great energy plants on the Purley Way reached the end of their natural lives: the Gas Works became redundant in 1976, as conversion to natural gas supply was completed; and Croydon 'B' was shut down in 1984 as part of the general phasing out of coal-fired power stations.

There were old domestic baths and a boiler which smoked and which the teams prayed would not go out whilst they were playing.
unfortunately the Old Mids developed their hockey section and in time we only had the use of one pitch, the Ex A and B XV's having to return to Purley Way.

I can only imagine first time visitors flying into Gatwick who might go by Taxi to central London thinking either the taxi drivers taking them somewhere else, or sitting there in disbelief that this is one of the main routes into one of the worlds foremost cities.
I think the South Circular is too ambitious, and besides, the SCR is no kind of way to terminate a route like that.

Nine suspected illegal immigrants were arrested by police after they were found hiding in the back of a lorry in Purley Way.
