		Connex or Railtrack had decided in their infinite wisdom to work on the railway line between Redhill and Purley on the day of the marathon, so if we went to Redhill station, the choices would have been taking a bus to Purley or a train heading to Gatwick (the opposite direction).
		On arrival at 8:30, it took quite a time to simply walk out of the station because of the volume of people, but I was soon walking the short distance to the "blue" start, out of "red", "green" and "blue".
		At the 21 mile point, I went into another St. John's Ambulance station for a massage, and this time the medic told me that she thought that the problem with my hip was deep, and to just concentrate on walking in.

		Again this year, in someone's infinite wisdom, there was disruption on the railways on London Marathon day, so we set off for Purley railway station in our car at 7AM, rather than going to our local station, Redhill, to take a train to London Bridge.
		The Maze Hill railway station took five or ten minutes to leave, just because of the number of people leaving the trains, but once I was out and walking, the start seemed easy to get to and fairly free of people.
		We all walked slowly off to Trafalgar Square for a pizza meal, after which we parted company with Darren and Sandra, took a bus to Victoria, and came back to Purley on the 8:04PM train to finally arrive home at 9PM.

		The service included a minute's silence following the laying of flowers and wreaths, at 1.39pm, exactly ten years later to the minute that the crash occurred at Purley Railway Station The minute's silence was movingly ended by an express station thundering through the station, just feet from the gathered crowd.
		The bereaved, injured and others involved in the Purley rail crash, ten years ago, were invited by the Rev. Charles Trefusis to join in a simple service and act of remembrance at Christ Church,Purley, on Thursday 4 March.
		Relatives and those involved travelled from the south coast (from where many of the injured had travelled), and one woman who was injured by the accident even travelled from New York to attend the service.
