Larger species, such as White-throated Needletail, are amongst the fastest flyers in the animal kingdom.
Swifts range in size from the Pygmy Swiftlet (Collocalia troglodytes), which weighs 5.4 g and measures 9 cm (3.7 inches) long, to the Purple Needletail (Hirundapus celebensis), which weighs 184 g (6.5 oz) and measures 25 cm (10 inches) long.
The nest of many species is glued to a vertical surface with saliva, and the genus Aerodramus use only that substance, which is the basis for bird's nest soup.

Due to the brief views and the identification difficulties of the genus, the identification was not made beyond either Silver-backed Needletail H. cochinchinensis, or Brown-backed Needletail H.
Size and structure was very similar to White-throated Needletail predominantly dark with a conspicuous white U-shaped band around the under-tail coverts and sides of the vent/rump with an indistinct paler grey throat patch.
This leaves just two remaining species either Silver-backed or Brown backed Needletail, because of the paler throat and a brief impression of a pale back it seems reasonable to assume that Silver-backed Needletail is the more likely.

On top of one of the foothills of the Bataan mountains, not very far from the moth-balled Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, I found a spot where the wind seems to be funneled by the lay of the land, making the area above it a favorite of soaring birds.
Got lucky today (April 5, 2006) to witness a squadron of Purple Needletails swooping in long circles around the area.
These fast fliers started their circular flight path by hugging the treetops in the valley below, then flying in an inclined angle towards the hilltop where I was positioned.

 Philippines Custom tour April 2006
A perched Blue-naped Parrot gave nice views, a Brown-backed Needletail was picked out of the swarm of swiftlets and we encountered our first ‘Palawan’ Crows with their distinctive flight and strange croaking calls.
Purple Heron, Pintail Snipe and Chinese Pond Heron all appeared during further roadside stops as we made our way south to the attractive coastal town of Narra.
After an enjoyable lunch and a rest it was time to board out outrigger bunka for the short ride to the off-shore island of Rasa although not before we had secured distant views of the main specialty, the endangered Philippine Cockatoo from the port.

Four Purple Needletail flashed through the sky constantly like a formation of fighter jets, appropriate to the setting I thought.
An Arctic Warbler was in the less maintained area of the Cemetery to the south of the Monument, as was a White Collared Kingfisher and small flocks of both White Breasted Munia and White Breasted Woodswallows.
One Scaly Ground Thrush was in the park adjacent to the Gordon monument, as was the best bird of this leg of the trip, a Purple Throated Sunbird.

 Sulawesi 2000
Our walk up and back on the road turned up a small flock of Purple Needletails, a family of Barred Rails, a few Wandering Whistling Duck, Sunda Teal, and a beautiful flock of Chestnut Munias.
Purple Needletails were soaring high up in front of the clouds off and on the whole morning, joined lower down by Uniform, Moluccan, and Glossy Swiftlets.
Back at the lodge, we had about 4-5 Purple Needletails buzz down close to the lodge, affording great looks.

 BIRDTRIP SULAWESI & HALMAHERA
I saw 115 lifers of which 83 were endemics.
Highlights were my most wanted bee-eater: Purple Bearded-; 2 Birds of Paradise; 2 Pitta species; 9 Kingfishers (5 endemics), 13 parrotspecies; Maleo and a Diabolic Nightjar at full daylight only inches away.
It could not be identified otherwise, this bird is reported to expand northwards); Large Sulawesi Hanging-parrot; Small Sulawesi Hanging-parrot.

Just after first light i found myself looking over Carambolim Lake where good numbers of Pheasant-Tailed and Bronze Winged Jacana were seen amongst the water lilys, Purple Swamphen were also very numerous on the edge of the lake.
Moving on White-Rumped Shama was seen on the forest floor quickly dissapearing into the undergrowth.Walking back to the camp White-Bellied Woodpecker could be heared drumming in the distance,the drumming then got closer, it then flew across a forest opening and dissapeared deep into the forest.
The next bird to be seen was a Blue-Eared Kingfisher perched on a pole in the river as we approched nearer it flew from its perch and flew further down river.

 Birding in West New Guinea and East Indonesia
The birds here among others are Purple Swamphen, Buff-banded Rail, White-browed Crake, Lesser Golden Plover, Swinhoe's Snipe, Chestnut Bittern (new record for West NG region), etc.
Day5: After a morning meal, we'll take a safe wooden longboat drive to reach Batanta and Salawati Island as the main endemics island of the areas.
In the afternoon, we'll begin our birding around the nearest forest to see Fiery-browed Starling, Sulawesi Crested Myna, Purple Needletail, Grey-rumped tree-swift, etc. Just before down, by standing at an open area, we will see the Sulawesi and Great Eared Nightjar sometime flying around to catch on their diet.

 BirdForum - What UK bird would you love to see/tick next?
For me it would have to be a Bee Eater which have been reported in the UK recently.The reason, other than it would be a lifer, is that they are a fabulous looking bird.
But I will go to York for it and bring my 1979 Pink Floyd Album collection.....
Not a bird, I know, but i would love to find a Whistling Tree Badger in Duffie Park.

 Indonesia Trip Report 2003
There was also a young guy named Yunus, he speaks good English and should be able to do some guiding but we didn’t try him.
From clearings in the forest Purple Needletail were picked out regularly.
In the Toro area we caught up with a calling Sulawesi Hawk-Cuckoo and had some more Purple Needletails.

 BIRDWATCHING IN
Checked in at the Pagoda Inn (at 13.30), given to its 84 year old owner 54 years ago by Coca Cola - looked as though it hadn't been paintedd since, and its "comfort room", in common with all in the Philippines, had no toilet-seats [what do they do with them?].
Took off for the hills, reaching degraded forest after 90 mins: skittish feeding flock included Flame-templed Babbler, and Philippine Needletails fed overhead with Purple Needletails.
Pink-bellied Imperial-Pigeon, Philippine Needletail, Spotted Wood-Kingfisher, Tarictic Hornbill, White-winged Cuckoo-shrike, Flame-templed Babbler, Negros Striped- Babbler, Philippine Tailorbird, White-vented Whistler, Crimson Sunbird, Golden-yellow White-eye.
