In fact, Prince's new album might more accurately have been titled "Around Great 60's Rock in a Day." It is redolent of 60's rock, or at least of 60's rock myths, in many ways, from the cover art, which recalls the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine" cartoon feature, to the lyrics, the musical stylings and the vocals.

While the movie "Purple Rain" was enjoyable in it's own laughable way and went on to become a major box office smash, the soundtrack album was a whole 'nother animal.
Prince took his pop smarts, mixed them with his funk appeal and rock-guitar heroics, set it on spin cycle, and came away with an enjoyably listenable album that was of it's time as much as it was ahead of it's time.
But "Purple Rain" was the one album where Prince managed to balance his slightly off-kilter perversion and musical adventurousness against his desire for pop success and come up aces.

Purple Rain's gazillion-selling soundtrack album has more or less eclipsed the film in pop culture history books.
The film is obvious, and conflict is merely prelude to (Prince and) the Resolution, but Magnoli's professional, downright neorealistic approach to filming the concert clips almost disguises how audacious a structural conceit is the film's climax: nearly a half-hour of musical numbers that render the solipsism of Prince's vanity project entirely justifiable.

The best extra, though, is the collection of "Purple Rain"-era videos, including a killer rare live performance of "I Would Die 4 U/BABY I'M A STAR." The only bummer of the set: the absence of the enigmatic Prince's participation, considering he wrote the songs and inspired the script.
