Purple code - US military name for Japanese Foreign Office code
Purple was the name used by the US military to identify the most secure diplomatic cryptographic system used by the Japanese Foreign Office during, and just before, World War II.
The Purple machine was a successor to, and improvement on, both the Red machine and what the Americans called the M machine (used in some embassies and consulates by attaches).
In fact, the Purple machine was a Japanese development, the last of a series designed by a Japanese Navy captain, though there seems to have been some assistance by at least one Polish officer prior to the 1930s.

PURPLE - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The codename of PURPLE referred to binders used by US cryptanalysts for material produced by various systems; there had been a RED machine used by the Japanese Foreign Office, and purple was the next available color.
The PURPLE machine itself was first used by Japan in June 1938, but US and British cryptologists had broken some of its messages well before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

 Why is it called Purplehunt?
That name, "Purple," was code name attributed to the machine that produced the Japanese most secret code system during World War II.
The Purple Machine was actually an adaptation of the German "Enigma Machine." The Japanese referred to their machine by two names: "Typewriter ’97," and "J." The former appellation was descriptive.
Adding to complication of the code was the fact that four wheels were also shifted continually by this sophisticated ciphertext machine.

Code Red days, in reality, occur infrequently and even when they occur, as was the case on June 26, the impact is local, showing up on one or two ozone monitors in an entire region.
One was in North Raleigh (none of the other three monitors in Wake County registered Code Red, including the monitor in downtown Raleigh) and one in Granville County.

 Welcome
Purple was a cipher used by Japan during World War Two to code diplomatic messages to various embassies throughout the world.
Physically, a PURPLE machine consisted of two electronic typewriters separated by a plugboard and a box containing the cryptographic elements in s series of relays within an intricate network of wiring (Deadly Magic 63).
The cryptanalysts involved in breaking Purple worked to match "proposed plaintext", a guess as to the text of the original message, that were simultaneously received in Red and Purple to determine proposed plainetext, because they could decode the Red message.

Cryptanalysis - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Cryptanalysis (from the Greek kryptós and analýein, "to loosen" or "to untie") is the study of methods for obtaining the meaning of encrypted information without access to the secret information which is normally required to do so.
In non-technical language, this is the practice of codebreaking or cracking the code, although these phrases also have a specialised technical meaning (see code).
Governments have long recognised the potential benefits of cryptanalysis for intelligence, both military and diplomatic, and established dedicated organisations devoted to breaking the codes and ciphers of other nations, for example, GCHQ and the NSA, organisations which are still very active today.

Though code breaking does not win wars in and of itself, it certainly helps to shorten wars, as was the case for the Allied troops in World War II.
This paradigm shift from linguistics (used on codes that enchiphered words as a single unit) to mathematics (used on codes that enciphered each letter) was significant to World War II cryptology.
This code was based on a codebook, in which each Japanese word was given a 5-digit numerical code.

US access to private Japanese diplomatic communications (even the most secret ones) was also less useful than it might have been because policy in Japan in the pre-War period was controlled largely by military groups (eg, in China and Manchuria), not by the Foreign Office.
And, the Foreign Office itself deliberately kept from its embassies and consulates much of the information it did have, so the ability to read Purple transmissions was less than definitive regarding Japanese intentions.

Prior to that time, all useful modern encryption algorithms had been symmetric key algorithms, in which the same cryptographic key is used with the underlying algorithm by both the sender and the recipient who must both keep it secret.
All of the electromechanical machines used in WWII were of this logical class, as were the Caesar and Atbash cyphers and essentially all cypher and code systems throughout history.
The 'key' for a code is, of course, the codebook, which must likewise be distributed and kept secret.
