  Encyclopedia: Pursat
Located in the western part of the country, Pursat is bordered by, clockwise from the north, Battambang, the Tonle Sap Lake, Kompong Chhnang, Kompong Speu, Koh Kong, and Thailand, Pursat offers generous access to both the Tonle Sap and the Cardamom Mountains.
For the time being, Pursat receives few visitors and the two attractions, the Cardamoms and the Tonle Sap will require a little initiative on the tourist's part to visit, but having seen both myself, it would be an initiative well rewarded.
Pursat province does offer the opportunity (for the time being, anyway) to see one of the larger and markedly less touristed floating villages without a significant investment in time or money.

 Tales of Asia - Pursat
Pursat is one province that has a bit of eco-tourism potential.
Access to Pursat is predominantly by road only as National Highway 5, the road connecting Battambang and Phnom Penh, cuts through the province.
There are in fact, a number of floating villages in the province and I have visited several that are only accessible from the lake, Peach Kantil, Kbal Taol, and Prek Kra.

After the destruction in Pursat the total number of weapons destroyed in Cambodia since May 1999 will be over 158,000.
The first Flame of Peace ceremony in Cambodia was held in Pursat in January 2001 and EU ASAC has conducted Weapons for Development campaigns in the province, has assisted in giving the police extra training and equipment and in 2004 set up a programme to train Commune Council to take responsibility for Weapons Security.
One of EU ASAC's major activities is to assist the Ministry of National Defence implement a Weapons Registration and Safe Storage project for all small arms and light weapons (SALW) under their control.

Freed from Pursat prison on bail just 11 day after being jailed on assault charges, a 19-year-old "bad boy" is back behind bars in connection with the alleged rape Saturday night of a 14-mont-old girl.
He had never heard of a rape case in Pursat that involved a victim younger than 9, he said.
Thong Sakal, a Licadho human rights worker operating in Pursat, said the province is considered by his group to have the highest numbers of rapes in Cambodia.

I wish to also to express my warm appreciation to our people and the provincial authorities of all levels in Pursat, especially the CPP working team led by HE Minister of Industry Suy Sem in the combat against floods in 2000 and 2001 and flood and drought in 2002.
It was hard when the people in Pursat have too much water but it was even worse when our people in the districts of Veal Veng and Kravanh did not have sufficient water last year.

A discussion of environmental stability illustrates that flooding is a natural occurrence in the watershed but that rapid and extensive deforestation affects the natural hydrologic cycle and may increase the magnitude and frequency of flooding.
Part Four looks at the history of instability in the region stating that the social context of the Pursat watershed is inseparable from the greater social context of Cambodia.
Part Six concludes that living in the Pursat watershed inevitably involves living with floods, and that the extent of damage is determined by a complex measure of vulnerability which is, in turn, affected by changes in the environmental and social spheres.

The study critically analyzed an evolution of the attempting to sell community forest land by community to a private cassava processing firm, and examined the level of their satisfactions to the selling effort and dug up the causes leaded to the main problem and implications.
Four main factors motivating to the selling attempt were because of low household income; lack of knowledge on CF related laws; rumors and unconfident; and inappropriate decision-making.

From Veal Veng you have the option of turning east to Pursat town or continuing north and then turning left to Pailin or right to Battambang.
You can make Pursat in a day but if you want to continue north through the mountains to Pailin or Battambang you may find yourself in a race to beat the setting sun and this is a race you don't want to lose.

The young adults of the region seem to get the most out of the classes, because it is they who are the civil servants of the 20 ministries of the Pursat region and who are the employees of the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) of Pursat.
The Pursat community is not ready to take charge of the PPRC’s development; it is impossible to manage a training center and to make it autonomous in a corner of the world where the development is low.

CWARS' first vocational training school was established in Pursat Town to address the needs of the Disabled people in the Province.
CWARS Cambodian Field Staff conducted interviews with potential students in the area, and training courses were planned according to their expressed interests and needs.
The first group of 46 amputee trainees were enrolled in the newly renovated Pursat Vocational Centre, and classes began in April 1995.

Rather than endure a whole day on the move, I decided to break the journey at the town of Pursat (a little over half way) and continue north a couple of days later.
Khmers pay a mere 2,500 riel for the same journey.  The train was late leaving, but once we got going it proceeded in a surprisingly business-like manner, just very slowly.
The rice harvest was almost over, the yellow stubble was being burned in places and the whole landscape was looking very arid.
