Purse Distribution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In horse racing, the term purse distribution may refer to the total amount of money paid out to the owners of horses racing at a particular track over a given period of time, or to the percentages of a race's total purse that are awarded to each of the highest finishers.
One frequently-implemented reform was to include horses finishing fifth in the purse distribution; the method most often employed for doing this was to award 60% of the purse to the winner, 20% to second, 11% to third, 6% to fourth and 3% to fifth, a format still observed by many tracks today.
This system is still in use at all of the state's thoroughbred tracks today, although a slight modification in the actual percentages (resulting in the second-place share being increased at the expense of the third and/or fourth) was made in 2005.

Without appreciably higher purses, the horses entering the game at the bottom of the racing pyramid will be left behind, with little chance of any monetary return for their owners.
The overall highest average earnings per runner for three-year-olds is in part due to the fact that purses for three-year-olds (Table 12) are higher on average than for any other age bracket, plus three-year-olds have the opportunity to compete outside their age division, notably in the fall.
Table 16 examines races and purses by distance (excluding two-year-old races, which are primarily sprints for most of the year), and purses generally increase with distance.

A record $1,177,769,765 in purses was distributed in 58,686 races, the fewest races held in North America since 1971.
Purse money allocated to stakes races in 2004 amounted to 23.8% of the total for the year, and Table 5 indicates why it is important to have a horse that can run in added-money events.
Three-year-olds are annually able to win the most money because average purses for three-year-olds are higher than those for any other age group (Table 12) and three-year-olds have a lot of opportunities outside their own age division in the fall.

While a certain portion of each purse is guaranteed to be paid after the event, some of the cash is what formerly was referred to as Studebaker money, placed in the purse simply for appearance sake.
