Puspa Lata Das, a veteran freedom fighter and former parliamentarian is an eminent social worker.
Born on March 27, 1915 at North Lakhimpur, Smt.Puspalata Das is one of the surviving freedom fighters from Assam.
Smt.Puspalata Das was elected a member of Rajya Sabha in 1951 and retained it for the next term till 1961.

 The Hindu : First to contest against Nehru-Gandhi family
The first tussle was in 1948 when Purushottam Das Tandon, backed by Sardar Patel defeated Acharya Kripalani, whose candidature was supported by Jawaharlal Nehru.
Tandon, however, resigned a few months later as some senior leaders including Nehru declined to work in the Congress Working Committee.
The next election was in 1977 when Brahmananda Reddy, supported by Indira Gandhi, defeated Siddhartha Shankar Ray who had the backing of leaders such as Y. Chavan, who later formed the syndicate Congress.

There were always two parallel tendencies in the Congress — BJP positive and anti-BJP, tendencies inherited from an earlier, pre-BJP period when Purushottam Das Tandon defeated Jawaharlal Nehru at the first Congress session in Bhubaneshwar in 1950.
While the Nehru-Tandon contest reflected differences within the Congress on the nature of Indian nationalism, Indira Gandhi’s cautious stance after her second-coming in 1980 was conditioned by the fear of losing Hindu votes because excessive talk of a so-called Muslim vote-bank was creating a backlash.
This caused him to contemplate the mandir-mandal mahayudh in the Hindi belt, not like a Nehru but more like Purshottam Das Tandon.

According to eminent journalist-author Durga Das (India—From Curzon to Nehru and After (P. 229) it was a very controversial decision by Gandhiji.
He also proved his hold on the Congress even in his last days by getting Purushottam Das Tandon elected as Congress President four months before his death in August 1950 against Nehru's candidate Acharya Kripalani though Nehru had threatened to resign if Tandon, whom he called “Hindu revivalist”, was elected.
When the news of Tandon's success was brought to Patel by C. Rajagopalachari, Patel asked him whether he had brought Nehru's resignation.
